The Rugby League World Cup is at the center of a broadcasting controversy as Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy urges administrators to secure a free-to-air TV deal for the upcoming tournament in Australia. The event, traditionally shown on the BBC, will now be exclusively available on Premier Sports, a subscription service, sparking widespread backlash from fans and politicians alike.
Why Free-to-Air TV Matters for Rugby League
Rugby league has a deep cultural significance in communities across the UK, particularly in the north of England. The sport's identity is tied to accessibility, and free-to-air broadcasts have historically brought together millions of viewers. The 2022 World Cup, held in England, set records with over 30 million cumulative viewers, with England's men's matches attracting audiences exceeding one million each.

Lisa Nandy, MP for Wigan and a self-proclaimed rugby league fan, has publicly urged the International Rugby League (IRL) to negotiate with UK free-to-air broadcasters. She emphasized that the sport is a source of pride and identity, and that fans deserve to follow the tournament without financial barriers.
The Broadcasting Rights Battle
Premier Sports has acquired exclusive rights to stream the 2025 Rugby League World Cup in the UK and Ireland. This marks a significant shift from the BBC's long-standing partnership with the sport. The decision has raised concerns about the sport's visibility and growth, especially with the men's, women's, and wheelchair tournaments running concurrently.
Nandy's plea comes as the IRL faces pressure to reconsider its commercial strategy. While subscription services offer revenue, the long-term benefits of free-to-air exposure are undeniable. The table below compares the potential impact of each broadcasting model:
| Broadcaster | Access | Reach | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBC (Free-to-air) | Universal | High (30M+ cumulative) | Lower direct revenue |
| Premier Sports (Subscription) | Paywall | Limited | Higher per-user revenue |
Key Takeaways for Fans and Stakeholders
- The Rugby League World Cup will be exclusively on Premier Sports unless a free-to-air deal is reached.
- Lisa Nandy is calling on the IRL to work with terrestrial broadcasters like the BBC.
- Historical data shows free-to-air coverage significantly boosts viewership and engagement.
- Fans can voice their support through petitions and social media campaigns.
What Can Be Done to Save Free-to-Air Coverage?
The IRL has yet to respond publicly to Nandy's request. However, pressure from parliament and the public could influence negotiations. The BBC has not ruled out showing select matches, particularly England's games, if a compromise is reached.
For now, fans are left waiting. The tournament is scheduled for this autumn, and a resolution is needed soon to ensure maximum accessibility. As Nandy stated, rugby league brings communities together, and the sport's future depends on keeping it visible to all.
