The Southport killer, Axel Rudakubana, has been accused by victims' families of attempting to manipulate the system after his transfer from Belmarsh prison to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital. The move, which does not alter his 52-year sentence, has sparked outrage as the second anniversary of the attack approaches.
Why Was the Southport Killer Transferred to Broadmoor?
Authorities concluded that Rudakubana could not be managed safely in a category A prison due to his mental health condition. The high-security hospital Broadmoor has facilities for treating violent offenders with psychiatric needs, but families and prison officers argue this is a manipulation tactic.

Reactions from Families and Prison Officers
Chris Walker of Bond Turner, representing the three bereaved families, called the timing "devastating" and accused Rudakubana of "attempting to manipulate the system." The Prison Officers' Association chair Mark Fairhurst stated that the killer would now enjoy freedoms afforded to mentally unwell patients, funded by taxpayers, while prison staff face increased risks.

FAQ
Can the Southport killer ever be released?
No. Axel Rudakubana was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years in prison, meaning he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars or under hospital detention.
Does Broadmoor have lower security than a prison?
Broadmoor is a high-security psychiatric hospital with strict measures, but patients have more therapeutic freedoms and fewer physical restraints than in a Category A prison like Belmarsh.
What happens to the victims' families now?
The families are seeking a meeting with authorities to get answers about the transfer and to ensure Rudakubana remains under maximum security despite being classified as a patient.
The case continues to raise questions about the intersection of mental health, criminal justice, and victim rights. As the second anniversary of the Southport attack approaches, families and prison staff remain vigilant against any perceived manipulation.
