How to prepare a crop of watermelons for the home garden, watermelon is one of the most refreshing crops that we can grow to consume in summer, but to do so we must start preparing much earlier to be able to harvest them, so we are going to see in this article how we can sow this cucurbit from seed at the end of winter or beginning of spring.
Although you can do direct sowing, I prefer to do seedbeds so let's see how we can prepare for this delicious crop.

#1:
The watermelon belongs to the cucurbit family like the cucumber or the pumpkin. This helps us to identify more or less how its care and needs should be. It is a crop that requires good temperatures to develop perfectly and be in full sun and in general it is a crop that takes up a lot of space since it is creeping and is not usually staked due to the weight of its fruits.

Although I prepare the seedbed at the end of winter, you can also do direct sowing in its final location, although for this we will have to wait until spring is more advanced (or put a micro tunnel) since to germinate it will need around 15º minimum to germinate, although later to develop around 13º minimum it could grow, although the optimum would be between 23º and 30º.
I put a lot of emphasis on the issue of temperatures in this crop so that you can get an idea of when you can plant them and/or when you can put them in their final location.

#3:
We prepare our seedbeds. To do this, we must choose seedbeds that have a certain depth and are somewhat wide so that the time the watermelon is growing in the seedbed can develop perfectly.
For example, I use recycled coffee cups but it could also be done in Yogurts, filling them with our special substrate for seedbeds so that in this way they do not lack anything to germinate, I also normally use the hot bed seedbed that we made so that it has good temperatures and germinates much better.

#4:
If everything goes well and we achieve the optimal temperatures in 7 days, our watermelon will already be germinating, which we will leave in a place protected from low temperatures but it is very important that it receives good sunlight so that the seedlings do not become dry. We must also pay attention to the irrigation so that the substrate does not dry out and in subsequent videos and articles we will see how to plant it in the garden and its care and watering before harvest.
