Police Admit Errors Before Manchester Synagogue Attack 2026

Greater Manchester police have admitted to investigation errors that preceded the tragic Manchester synagogue attack on Yom Kippur. The force's chief constable, Sir Stephen Watson, apologized for a 'missed opportunity' to act after crucial data from the attacker's phones was left unexamined. This failure allowed Jihad al-Shamie to carry out one of the deadliest antisemitic attacks in recent British memory.

Missed Opportunity: Unreviewed Mobile Data

Watson revealed that officers seized Shamie's mobile devices during arrests in February and September last year. However, the data contained 'substantial' evidence of an extremist mindset that was not reviewed until after the attack. 'There can be little doubt that the information contained within these devices would have inspired further investigative action,' Watson stated.

The Attack and Its Aftermath

On October 7, 2023, Shamie attacked the Heaton Park synagogue wearing a fake suicide belt. He was shot dead by police. Two Jewish men, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, lost their lives. The attack occurred on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur.

Companion Convicted for Terrorist Reconnaissance

Mohammad Bashir, a friend of Shamie, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years. He and Shamie conducted a hostile reconnaissance mission at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Swindon, two months before the synagogue attack.

Police Apology and Internal Review

Watson expressed deep regret, stating, 'I am disappointed at the prospect of adding to the distress of all of those affected by the terrible events last October.' The internal review highlighted systemic failures in data handling. The force is now implementing changes to prevent such oversights.
