What would be a particularly important criterion for you, dear readers, when booking a guest room? Quite a few of you would probably answer: “The view, of course”. Others might find it important to have enough space and spaciousness. But if you book yourself into Deep Sleep in Wales, you have to forego both and many more amenities that a hostel normally comes with. An overnight stay here will certainly be an unforgettable adventure, as the accommodation is no less than the lowest-lying hotel in the world. In any case, a look at its website reveals that demand is high despite the high prices.

- Costly sleep

Because even if there is no running water in Deep Sleep, WiFi is actually available thanks to a one-kilometer-long special cable underground. Of course there is no cell phone reception down here. The accommodation has four spartan huts and the so-called “grotto”, a kind of private room. Whether romantic feelings arise down here with a constant temperature of only 10 degrees Celsius remains questionable. If you want, you can bring your own food for this special trip. The operator also offers a simple breakfast and dinner. The menu options can be viewed on the official website.
Costly sleep
The guide and a technical staff member of the company stay with the guests in deep sleep throughout the night. Sleep, if any, will be short. Because you have to get up again at 8 a.m. in order to start the strenuous climb back up by 10:30 a.m. at the latest. The tours sometimes start several times a week until late in December.

“So far, more than 1,000 people have stayed with us,” say the operators. And that despite the fact that you have to dig deep into your pockets for a night of deep sleep. The “room” in one of the cabins costs an impressive 399 pounds, which is the equivalent of almost 475 euros. The “Grotte” is even more expensive at 599 pounds per night (a good 710 euros). Please note, among other things, that children aged 14 and over are only allowed to stay overnight in the deepest hotel in the world. All questions about your stay can be answered on the official website.

The deepest hotel in the world is also always a challenge for the Deep Sleep employees: “Re-making the beds at a depth of 419 meters is not exactly an easy job.” The company founder came up with the idea a few years ago because he had always been a big fan of adventures underground. During tours through the mine, more and more guests asked whether it was possible to sleep down there. It is not clear how much the company invested in the unusual hotel. But: “Seeing the guests’ reaction to this special place makes all the effort worth it.”
