Europe has more than 40 countries and therefore as many capitals that couldn't be more different. But which one is actually the most beautiful from the perspective of travelers? That's what we wanted to find out with our big vote. Now the result is clear - and there is a pretty clear winner.
According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education, there are a total of 47 recognized states in Europe. Almost each of them has its own capital, which is often one of the most visited destinations in the respective country. But which capital can actually inspire its visitors the most in terms of attractiveness? We wanted to find out in a big vote.
To do this, we first asked our more than 200,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram which European capital they liked best while traveling so far. The editorial team then selected the most frequently mentioned cities from all the submissions and added their own favorite cities. Our voting ultimately resulted in 14 cities to choose from, spread across the entire continent. And we wanted to know: Which of them most deserves the title of “Most Beautiful Capital in Europe”? In the end, almost 27,000 votes were collected - and the result is now clear!
The most beautiful capital in Europe is…
…Rome! The Italian capital received an impressive 19 percent of all votes and beat Vienna, the second-placed city, in the voting with a lead of around 3 percent. Portugal's capital Lisbon follows in third place with 13 percent of the vote.

Some countries don't even have a capital
Did you know that Switzerland actually doesn't have an official capital? In 1848, Bern was elected as the permanent federal seat - previously the Estates and National Council had rotated between different cities. And now Bern may also function as such in practice, but to date there is no place in the federal constitutional law that defines Switzerland as a capital.

A capital is therefore not absolutely necessary for a country. It is also possible for small countries to organize their political institutions in a decentralized manner. City-states with their own state system and an independent constitution (e.g. Monaco, Singapore, Vatican) represent their own capital, so to speak.
