In the Valley of the Wind: Lake Toblino and Lake Cavedine
Around twenty minutes by car from Trento, on the other side of the local mountain Monte Bondone, the Valle dei Laghi, the valley of the lakes, unfolds its charm. Perhaps the most beautiful lake in the valley is Lake Toblino with its romantic 16th century castle, often shrouded in fog. It sits high up on a rocky outcrop and is often used as a film set. Protected by the mountains, there is a pleasant Mediterranean climate here. The vegetation is also Mediterranean: on one side you pass vines and stone walls from which fig trees sprout. On the other side, plane trees and cypresses grow, through which the lake shimmers.
The locals also call the Valley of the Lakes the Valley of the Wind because from midday onwards the so-called Ora, a warm air channel that blows air from Lake Garda towards the north, circulates here. Water sports enthusiasts also benefit from this, especially surfers at Lake Cavedine, which is located directly behind Lake Toblino. You can swim not only in the lake, but also in the Sarca River, which leaves the lake in the north and later flows into Lake Garda. A beautiful swimming spot is under the Roman bridge in the small town of Ceniga south of Lake Cavedine.
Small lake in Trentino: Lago di Lamar
At the other end of the Valle dei Laghi lies one of the most curious lakes in Trentino, the small Lago di Lamar. It looks like a mirror surrounded by forested rocks. The grassy beach is particularly popular with families in summer. The surrounding mountain forest is a protected area for bats. If warning signs are to be believed, the lake's remoteness also attracts bears. The first specimens were released into the wild in the Dolomites 25 years ago.

High up: Lake Molveno
Lake Molveno is located at an altitude of over 800 meters, and as you approach you can see its emerald green water shimmering. Nestled between the Brenta Dolomites and the Paganella mountain range, it has been voted the most beautiful lake in Italy several times, most recently in 2024, with its extensive meadows and white pebble beaches. To protect the crystal clear water, only electric boats are allowed.
The lake is up to 120 meters deep, so the water temperature does not rise above 21 degrees even in August. A two-hour hiking tour around the water leads to a Roman bridge, which is now hidden behind dense vegetation. You also pass five small fortresses that were intended to stop the advance of Napoleon's army, which had previously defeated the Austrian army south of Trent.

Healing and warm: Lake Levico and Lake Caldonazzo
Mit 20 Kilometern nicht weit von Trient entfernt liegt der Lago Levico, auch bekannt für seine Therme im Dorf Vetriolo am Berg. Das Heilwasser kommt aus einer Höhe von 1500 Metern. Der österreichische Kaiser Franz Josef I. erhob die „Levico Terme“ im Jahr 1894 zur Stadt, denn zu dieser Zeit war die Gegend noch Teil der österreich-ungarischen Monarchie. Schon damals wurden Flaschen mit Heilwasser nach Berlin und Moskau geliefert.

While Lake Levico also offers bathing beaches on its southeastern shore, but is otherwise rather inaccessible, the neighboring lake, Lake Caldonazzo, is Trento's home lake. There are most campsites here, at the largest bathing lake in Trentino. Lake Levico and Caldonazzo are among the warmest swimming lakes in the Alps and are connected to each other by underground caves. The best view of both lakes is from the town of Tenna, where many rich people in Trent have a second home.
Round and turquoise blue: Lago di Tenno
The small, turquoise-blue mountain lake Tenno is almost circular and embedded in mountains above the busy shore road of Lake Garda. From the nearby medieval village of Canale di Tenno, where many artists live and which is one of the most beautiful in Italy, you also have a good view of the well-known north shore of Lake Garda, which is particularly crowded in summer. But many Trentino residents avoid it and prefer to stay in the higher part of the region.
