Coastal Youth Crisis: 17 Towns Reveal Harsh Realities 2026

The coastal youth crisis in England and Wales has deepened over the past decade, with a 73% decline in funding for youth services and nearly 1 million 16- to 24-year-olds not in work, education, or training. Our year-long journey along 17 towns revealed a generation left behind by policy failures and economic neglect.

The Scale of Deprivation in Coastal Towns

Data released last year found that 9 out of 10 of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England are coastal. Seven of these are in Blackpool, Lancashire, one in Hastings, Sussex, and one in Tendring, Essex. In Wales, the most deprived small area is in Rhyl, with other coastal towns also ranking among the most deprived nationally.

Voices from the Coast

Young people like Eleanor, 23, from Morecambe, told us they feel excluded from decision-making: “If people just chatted to the young people here and welcomed them to decision-making events, it would make this a much better place.” This sentiment was echoed up and down the coast.

Key Findings from Our Journey

• Decades of reduced funding for youth services have left young people isolated and despondent.
• Media portrayals labelling coastal youth as “lazy” or “feral” worsen stigma and discourage investment.
• Positive grassroots initiatives are emerging, but they lack sustainable support.
• Government policies have allowed the coastal problem to persist for generations.

Why the Coastal Youth Crisis Matters

Coastal communities have long been romanticised as holiday destinations, but the reality for young people is stark. Without access to training, jobs, or social services, many become trapped in cycles of poverty. The coastal youth crisis is not just a local issue—it reflects systemic failures in national policy.

What Can Be Done?

Investing in youth centres, mental health support, and vocational training can turn the tide. Community-led initiatives must be funded and scaled. Policymakers need to listen to the voices of young people and include them in decisions that shape their future.

FAQ

Our journey around the coast of England and Wales showed that the coastal youth crisis is urgent and requires immediate attention. By listening to the voices of young people and holding policymakers accountable, we can begin to rebuild the support systems they deserve.
