The X-Files: I Want to Believe director's cut, now streaming on Disney+, attempts to reinvigorate a franchise that has long lost its spark. Despite the added gore and Chris Carter's insistence that this version is superior, the film's fundamental flaws remain glaringly obvious.
Why the Director's Cut Fails to Deliver
Chris Carter has touted the new cut as a more visceral experience, but the extra blood and body horror only amplify the movie's existing problems. The plot, which involves a psychic paedophile priest and a bizarre head-transplant scheme, is as preposterous as ever. The characters, particularly Mulder and Scully, feel like hollow echoes of their former selves, and the dramatic tension is almost nonexistent.

The Plot: A Messy Blend of Supernatural and Medical Thriller
The story reunites Mulder and Scully years after leaving the FBI. A missing agent leads them to Father Joe, a convicted paedophile who claims psychic visions. The trail uncovers a criminal enterprise where a dying man's head is to be attached to a kidnapped woman's body. It sounds like a Cronenberg film, but the execution is clumsy and underwritten.
