To help you understand it better, Windows 10 and Linux are operating systems, and thefirmwareof the computer is the BIOS. On your mobile the OS can be Android or iOS, and thefirmwareIt is a code created by the manufacturer of your mobile.
You should also not confuse it with thedriversor drivers, which are installed in the operating system and are used to operate the components of a computer.
El firmware neither is it asoftware, although in reality, it could be said that it is a type ofsoftware , since it is an integral part of thehardware. In a certain sense, it is the point that unites thehardwareand tosoftware.
What is the firmware for?
As we have already explained, thefirmwareis the basic codewhich is responsible for controlling the electronic circuits of a device. This is how it makes them work, since it provides them with the instructions they have to follow so that the device works correctly and appropriately.
The instructions “teach” thehardwarehow should it startand what operations must be carried out towork as it should. In addition, it tells you how it should behave when working together with other devices.
How the firmware attack on cameras and other devices works
An attack offirmwarees very similar to a cyber attackor hacking of any kind. In this type of attack, what is done is to rewrite the program code to carry out the cybercriminal's objectives. This type ofsoftwareMalicious is a persistent and sneaky threat.
How is it hidden in thefirmwareIt's almost impossible to get rid of it, even if you format your computer. This affects the home security cameras , which can be disabled or used to access the network of the security company that controls them to extract confidential information.
And through the attack offirmwarethey candevelop many other attacks. Since the installation ofransomware y spywareto the manipulation of equipment or the theft of information.
Thissecurity breachcan come throughunsecured WiFi networks, exploitation ofvulnerabilitiesfrom the system, from the firmware itself or through external devices, such as USB sticks or ahardwarealready infected.
