Not all employees are ready to conform to corporate negativity.
Employers just cannot stop picking bones with their employees and they keep facing the wrath of acts of pro-revenge and unbelievable malicious compliance. It still confuses and surprises me as to why do companies have to do their employees dirty. I mean, the ones who are introverted, shy, and scared of losing their jobs are unfortunately comfortable with such negativity and say nothing when they are robbed of their rights. But as you know it, there is a parallel side to every story. There also exist some very confident employees who realize their worth and their rights and would never be pressed under the pressure of the management just because they believe they have the power to do so. There are many different ways such employees deal with unfair and unwelcomed acts of the management. One of those ways is to comply with exactly what they say but in a way that they will always remember the shoc,k they get after it.
Today’s story is about an employee, u/newtekie1, who decided to comply with their manager in a very malicious way. This employee used to travel quite frequently between the two offices of the organization and the company would pay mileage expenses for that. He would always take the long route in order to avoid tolls, which would obviously cost a lot, and keep the expense down as much as he could. Unfortunately, one day when he went to claim his expenses, he was not paid the full sum mentioned in his report and the reason they gave was that they only give mileage expenses for shorter routes. The employee came up with an amazing way to deal with this and that is for you guys to read.

1. A classic employee-employer drama is about to ensue.

2. I really like those employees who go the extra mile to add value to the business. Fair of the business to pay for the gas.
Via u/newtekie1
3. Very pure of the employee to save as much expense as possible. I think the company has found an asset.

4. As soon as I read that “well”, I know the story is about to take a turn.
OP should be in the good as they had been already saving by taking the long route. The bookkeeper over here is going to save some more money. Let’s see how and how much.

5. Of course this would piss the employees off. That’s called being selfish, not being efficient.
Via u/newtekie1
6. This is interesting. The new bookkeeper didn’t disburse the full amount to OP.

7. She will only pay mileage for the shorter route…hmm, I would suggest she rethink this strategy.

8. The employee now has it in writing and I think the new bookkeeper has no clue about the rolls on the shorter route. Would be interesting to see her reactions when she sees the total expense for the two weeks.

9. $130.15 for the $5.85 she was trying to save. Good luck saving money for your company, bookkeeper.

It’s one of those classic situations where you try to rip someone off but don’t have the brains to do so. The bookkeeper’s literacy about the shorter route having tolls was totally on her. If there is anyone who was saving money for the company was OP by taking the longer route. I love how she just fell into her own trap and all the employees did was comply to exactly what she asked them to do.
Here’s how Redditors responded to the story:
10. The fall must’ve hurt.

11. An accountant who doesn’t know math. Great selection, HR.

14. Thanks for saving the company $1.49, HR. Would certainly increase the profitability by 10% at the very least.

Mate, there is way too much happening in this comment.
