If you are about to do something that involves the personal interest of your next-door neighbor, then you are bound to obtain the consent of that neighbor before doing any such thing.

In today’s story, however, one such newly moved-in neighbor family did not follow this self-understood rule. Reddit user u/Ornery_River_2954 shared that she along with her family moved into a new neighborhood just 2 months after their next-door neighbors. Because the next-door neighbors moved in first, they put up a fence around their boundary without consulting OP. They ended up putting up a costly and demanded OP pay half of it. OP refused as by saying she and her partner were not consulted before putting the fence up, and they do not want to pay for such an expensive fence. The couple put up a fence of their own which was much cheaper, however, OP still ended up paying some amount to the new neighbor because she didn’t want any disruption of peace in the neighborhood.

OP paid the neighbor despite her husband and both their families saying the neighbors shouldn’t be paid anything. So the matter eventually to taken to the courts of the subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” by OP to know if paying the neighbor for the fence was the right thing to do or now.

1. For me, even that amount is too much. Let’s see how this unfolds.

2. OP and her family moved into a new neighborhood. Their next-door neighbors had moved in just 2 months ago and were quick to put up a fence.

3. The problem was, that the next-door neighbors had purchased and put up a costly, branded, fence without consulting OP and her family.

4. The family had plans to put up a fence of their own so they purchased a simple one and put it around their boundary, a very cheap one compared to the ones their neighbors put up.

5. As soon as they put up the fence, the neighbors showed up asking for half of the money for the fence they had put up. OP politely refused saying they weren’t consulted originally so they won’t pay. The neighbor got angry and a compromise was achieved.

6. To maintain peace in the neighborhood, OP decided to pay a certain amount but not half of it.

7. OP’s partner and both their families explicitly said the neighbors need not be paid anything for the fence they put up.

8. However, OP still went to the neighbor and gave $600, an amount she thought was adequate however, the neighbor got angry.

9. When the neighbor started yelling at OP about how much they had spent on the fence, OP told her to take it or leave it.

I don’t understand. For the title, specifically, I would say OP was NTA because the neighbors didn’t deserve a single penny from OP’s side. They didn’t consult the family and ended up spending $6-$7K on that boundary. Who even spends that much on a fence, anyway? But I would also declare OP YTA here because she went out of the way and still gave $600 to the neighbors despite clear word from her partner and both their families that the neighbors shouldn’t be paid anything.

Perhaps her reasoning safeguards just a bit that she didn’t want to disrupt peace in the neighborhood. But the problem here is that the neighbors would now know that this family is easy to mold. They can make demands and have them fulfilled with ease based on “maintaining peace in the neighborhood”.

10. OP was clear to the neighbor about purchasing the expensive fence without their consultation. She told them they should’ve waited till they shifted for a mutual decision on a fence that was within both their budgets

11. To end the debate, OP just handed the $600 to the neighbor and went away, even though the conversation had changed her mind quite a lot.

12. OP’s partner and family got angry after knowing OP had paid the neighbors a certain share for the fence. They didn’t want to give anything. OP took the matter to the AITA community.

Here’s what the internet had to say about this:

13. OP got declared an AH for paying the neighbors as this now will allow them to easily convince her for anything they want done.

14. They paid for and put up a fence for privacy and protection concerning their house. Asking OP and her family for a share just didn’t make any sense.

15. OP should have just said “no” and watched the neighbor boil.

16. If there is no legality binding you, then the neighbor doesn’t deserve a single penny.

After reading through the comments, here’s what OP had to say:

17. OP accepted she didn’t do the right thing by paying the neighbors despite her being told not to do so by her partner and both their families.

18. Putting up fences was a standard practice in the neighborhood OP and her family moved in so that is why the whole scenario popped up.

19. OP realized neighbors aren’t always nice and now she has to deal with AH neighbors, god knows for how long.
