Fly Infestations Summer 2025: Causes, Solutions & Prevention Tips 2026

Fly infestations are becoming a major summer nuisance across the UK, with many households reporting a significant rise in these pests. This article explores the causes behind the surge, practical solutions for flats and homes, and expert-backed prevention strategies to keep your living space fly-free.

Why Are Fly Infestations Increasing?

According to recent reports, the UK is experiencing an unusual spike in fly populations. Experts attribute this to warmer temperatures, increased humidity, and changes in waste management. Unlike the 1950s and 60s when sticky flytraps were common, modern homes often lack natural barriers, making them more vulnerable.

Urbanisation and reduced green spaces also play a role. Many residents, especially those in flats, have limited access to gardens, which reduces natural predators and breeding grounds for flies. The result is a perfect storm for infestations.

Key Factors Behind the Surge

• Climate change – warmer summers extend the fly breeding season.
• Poor waste segregation – organic waste left in bins attracts flies.
• Lack of insect screens – most UK windows open outward, making screens harder to install.
• Urban density – more people in smaller spaces increases fly contact.

Effective Solutions for Flats and Homes

For those without a garden, creating a wildlife pond is not an option. But there are practical alternatives. Insect screens are the most effective long-term solution, though they can be costly. However, they offer ventilation without letting insects in, especially mosquitoes.

For budget-friendly options, consider DIY screens using magnetic mesh, which can be fitted to outward-opening windows. Additionally, using essential oils like citronella or lavender can deter flies naturally.

Prevention Tips for a Fly-Free Summer

Prevention is always better than cure. Start by sealing cracks and gaps around windows and doors. Keep food covered, especially during picnics or outdoor meals. Regularly empty bins and clean surfaces to remove attractants.

If you live in a flat, consider installing a window screen kit that works with outward-opening windows. Also, use fans to create airflow, which discourages flies from landing.

Key Takeaways

• Install insect screens to reduce entry points.
• Maintain cleanliness to eliminate breeding sites.
• Use natural repellents like herbs and essential oils.
• Seek professional help if the infestation persists.
