A quick grab for your cell phone while driving or driving without a helmet can have drastic consequences in Greece in the future. Anyone who does not adhere to the new regulations not only risks high fines, but also loses their driving license - and this also applies to tourists.
The Greek Parliament is planning a comprehensive reform of the road traffic regulations. The aim is to reduce the number of traffic deaths. The new traffic rules in Greece impose severe penalties for cell phone use, speeding, not wearing helmets and more.

Handy am Steuer
The new regulations in Greece leave no room for habitual driving violations. Anyone who is caught with a cell phone to their ear will have to dig deep into their pockets: the first offense will result in a fine of 350 euros, plus a one-month driving license suspension. The second time, the fine increases to 1,000 euros and the driver's license is then lost for six months. The third time the maximum penalty follows: 2000 euros and a one-year driving ban.
Helmpflicht
Riding without a helmet - whether as a driver or as a passenger on the motorcycle - will in future be punished with the same penalties as for cell phone violations. The Greek Transport Association points to alarming figures: one in five motorcyclists does not wear head protection, and motorcyclists account for 38 percent of road deaths - that is more than twice as high as the EU average of 18 percent. Particularly frightening: More than two thirds of the drivers who died in an accident were not wearing a helmet.

Temporegeln
New speed limits are also intended to ensure more safety: in narrow streets it is reduced to 30km/h, while on main streets in town it remains at 50km/h. What is surprising, however, is the increase in the speed limit on motorways from the current 130 to 140km/h in the future. Anyone who is still traveling significantly too fast must expect drastic sanctions - a fine of up to 8,000 euros and a four-year driving license suspension can be imposed if the speed exceeds 200 km/h.
Aggressive behavior and illegal racing
Road users who behave aggressively or take part in street races will be hit particularly hard in the future. The first offense will result in a fine of 2,000 euros and a one-year driving ban. In the event of a repeat offense, these sanctions will double. The third time there is a fine of 8,000 euros and four years without a driving license.
Alcohol and smoking
The alcohol limit in Greece is 0.5. Anyone who exceeds this limit will face fines starting at 1,000 euros and a possible driving ban of up to ten years. In addition, smoking at the wheel in the presence of children under the age of twelve is already prohibited. Violations are also punished severely here.

Insurance gap
For holidaymakers in Greece with a rental car, traffic clubs strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance. The reason: around 500,000 of the eight million vehicles on Greek roads are said to be uninsured. The government is planning measures, but until they take effect, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Motorhomes in sight
Since the beginning of the year, stricter measures have also been taken against parking mobile homes with wild animals. A mobile home may only be left in designated areas or campsites for longer than 24 hours. Anyone who violates this rule risks fines of 300 euros per person. In the event of legal proceedings, a fine of up to 3,000 euros or up to three months in prison can be imposed.
