Anyone who walks through the streets of the old town of Carcassonne feels like they have been transported back to the Middle Ages. It is surrounded by a massive double wall with more than 50 defensive towers and is one of the largest and most impressive fortress cities in the world.
From afar you can see the old town, located on a hill in the Occitania region, with its defensive towers, intact city wall and the ancient bridge over the Aude. The so-called Cité de Caraassonne, which is still inhabited today, has served as a filming location in numerous films, such as the adventure film “Robin Hood – King of Thieves” with Kevin Costner in the leading role. Carcassonne was already populated by the Gauls in Roman times. Nowadays, however, the medieval sights dominate, especially the approximately three kilometer long city wall with a total of 52 defensive towers. The fortress complex is unique in Europe in terms of its size and state of preservation and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Other attractions include the Saint Nazaire Cathedral, built in the 12th century, the Chateau Corntal, the theater, the Zwinger, the Porte de Narbonnaise, the Pont Vieux, the market halls and the Fountain of Neptune, which can also be seen in the film “Robin Hood – King of Thieves”.
The Festival de Carcassonne takes place in July and August. With numerous concerts and theater performances, it is traditionally one of the biggest attractions. But the Jazz Week in April and the Feria de Carcassonne at the end of August are also popular events in the old town.

City on the water
Even though it is often very hot in summer in Carcassonne, water is omnipresent in the ancient trading city. On the one hand, there is the very beautiful, natural river Aude, which flows past below the Cité. On the northeastern edge of the city, the slightly smaller river Fresquel flows into the Aude. Also through Carcassonne flows the navigable Canal du Midi, which flows into the Mediterranean at Séte. It's about 80 kilometers by car from the city to the coast.
