12 Ways to Create Texture in Wood, a great part of adding texture to your work with tools you already have, you're looking at more over there your use particular.

made of wood, but also can be used used to make surfaces slightly faceted, uneven.

Keep your eyes open to what a tool can do for you in terms of adding texture to a surface.

This list is by no means exhaustive; It is just a point of starting to introduce woodworkers to what can do if you cross-reference the tools that probably already have. in his workshop with a little of thinking outside of the box. I don't even mention how to use argallera, hand planes, carving knives, soplet.

Nail set

Best Use: Works well in most forests. It can be time consuming if texturing large areas. Ideal for creating small medium sized focus areas.

What to do: If your nail system is too old or has been abused, you have to smooth its sides and end in order to create a clean, round hole. A belt sander is ideal for this simple task. Use a light tap with a mallet or hammer for a shallow dimple, or a heavier tap for a deeper, more pronounced effect. If you are finding that you are getting a lot of chipping and space the chips a little further apart. Different diameters of the set will give different looks.

Effect: Large to create a uniform texture, light to fill in smaller areas. They can be spaced evenly or randomly.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Chisel size

Best Use: As long as the gouge is sharpened properly, it will work very well on most woods. Strongly figured or very hard woods can pose a challenge, especially if the gouge is not very sharp. Very soft woods also crush with a less-than-sharp gouge. It works fast enough to cover large surfaces in a reasonable time, especially with large gouges.

What to do: Although passes generally work better cross grain, working parallel to the grain is possible with care. If an extra deep groove is needed, multiple passes may be necessary. With a firm footing, use both hands to control the gouge. Practice will give you a good idea of how to produce the size and depth of slot you are looking for.

Effect: Shallow grooves can feel quite delicate, while deep grooves are a very dramatic addition to a project.

Punch

Best Use: Works well in most forests. It can take a long time if texturing large areas. Ideal for creating small focus sized areas where a single light texture is needed.

What to do: With a punch in one hand and a mallet or hammer in the other, slowly add small dimples to the wood. Very similar to using a pinned nail to add texture.

Effect: Great for creating a uniform texture, very light for filling in smaller areas.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Chisel

Best Use: Works great in most forests to create a border texture, or they can be used to give texture to larger surfaces.

What to do: Used similarly to the nail and awl set, except the slots work best when oriented parallel to the grain of the wood. Cross-grooved grains have a tendency to split the grain and cause chipping. Sharpening the tool can improve crossgrain work. Tap lightly for almost imperceptible results, or greatly for deeper, more pronounced grooves.

Effect: Narrow but long triangular grooves are left in the forest surface.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Screw or Bolt Lag

Best Use: Works best on softer woods, but can be used on medium density species as well. It works great near an edge of a workpiece to produce a border as the head of the screw or bolt will not allow it to be used anywhere but the edge. Head removal is also an option.

What to do: Hold the lag bolt or screw in one hand and a hammer in the other. Be sure to keep your fingers out of the way of the hammer, as you are likely holding the screw or bolt fairly close to where the knocks occur. With one finger included on the edge of the workpiece, slowly move the screw or long bolt, using the quick-blow hammer to press the threads into the wood. You'll probably notice small flat spots on the threads, where the hammer is hitting the threads. Keep those flats facing up or the texture marks may vary slightly.

Effect: Small marks add light texture to a surface. You can change the effect by holding the screw or bolt at an angle to the edge, as well as hitting the screw or bolt near the center or one of its ends.

Router

Best Use: Works with all woods, and in many different situations. It can add very dramatic texture over a small or large surface.

What to do: Chuck a little on your router and make multiple passes over the workpiece. There are many ways to proceed, but carefully controlling your router path in some way is usually the best approach.

Effect: If a circle cutting template is used - circular slots can be added in a geometric pattern. A guide template and bandsawn template can be used to make the router to follow certain paths, creating various effects. Adjusting the bit type, cutting depth or number/density of passes can create heavy or light texture. There are a lot of texturing possibilities with a router.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Chisel

Best Use: Because a chisel is flat, it is easier to use on exterior surfaces. It is possible to work on flat or interior surfaces if you are determined. Any density of wood is appropriate.

What to do: Create faceted surfaces with a sharp chisel, working 'downhill' to reduce breakage. Sometimes it is easier to create the general shape you want with other tools/methods and then add texture to the surface with a chisel.

Effect: The texture of a chisel is less obvious, and can play a more subtle role in a piece of furniture.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Rotary tool

Best Use: To create a subtle, even texture on flat or round surfaces. Texturing large areas will be time consuming. Although results depend on bit selection, this technique works well in most species.

What to do: Systematically move the bit over the workpiece, creating small cuts directly next to each other.

Effect: Bit selection will determine the type of texture left, but a simple tight texture will probably be the result.

Round nail head

Best Use:Best for small areas of light texture in softer woods.

What to do: Used similar to the nail and punch set. First throw the nail into a drill, pull the trigger and smooth the nail head with about 120 and then 220 grit sandpaper to eliminate any inconsistencies. Gentle hammer taps are all that is needed to create the dimpled texture in soft wood.

Effect: Smooth, concave caps in the wood that can be spaced evenly or randomly.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Pyrography Pen

Best Use: Deeper texture can be added to softer woods. Great for texturing smaller areas.

What to do: Adjust the temperature to produce the type of effect you're looking for, then touch the tip of the pencil to the surface of the wood to add texture. A random or even pattern can be created.

Effect: The effect depends in part on the tip used, but generally speaking a small round or linear mark is burned into the wood, creating a small recess in the wood. The texture effect is quite light, and comes with a visual effect of the darker burnt area.

12 Ways to create texture in wood

Round file

Best Use: In the corners of most woods. Non-porous woods generally splinter less, but if care is taken porous woods can be worked. Not great for high-use edges, as the wood left on the edge can be susceptible to damage.

What to do: With the file in both hands, guide it toward the corner of the wood at a 45º angle. Don't push too hard or you will likely chip the area. I find it's best to ease the edge before adding texture to it as it will be less likely to chip. Try to space the notches as evenly as possible.

Effect: A row of notches is created on the edge of a workpiece.

Angle grinder

Best Use: Works well in most forests. Much less subtle than many other forms of texture. Best for medium to large areas, but can be used in small areas with experienced hands.

What to do: Practice on some scrap metal like an angle grinder works very fast. Move the tool across the workpiece in a sweeping motion. Experiment with different speeds, angles, etc., to produce a variety of effects. Make sure you are familiar with the feeding size before you begin.

Effect: A highly textured, wavy surface is left. Slightly different surfaces can be produced by using different cutting accessories, or manipulating the grinders in certain ways.
