How to Make a Homemade Pizza Oven, this is a great project, relatively cheap, that will keep you entertained all summer and even in the winter.
You'll find, in addition to making fantastic pizzas, that this oven comes into its element when slowly cooking large meat pies. Great cooking variations how to; beef ribs, pork ribs and even a whole pot of curry. Whichever you decide, just wrapping it in layers of aluminum foil will protect it from the heat and keep it tender and succulent.
Step 1: What you will need

There are many different styles of pizza ovens, from small clay ovens to larger scale concrete ovens. What you decide to build depends on a few factors including budget, location size restrictions, time, what you want to cook, etc.
We decided to build this pizza oven in a wooden box, so we had the option to move it if necessary.
Although if you decide to do this, remember that the build will probably be around half a ton, so a pallet jack or fork lift will be required. Many people find a more permanent location for the oven and build a brick support so that the pizza oven is at waist height when placed in front of it.
What you need:
- Sand (general purpose sand that generally contains small amounts of aggregate in the mix)
- Building sand (finer sand that is good for detailed work)
- Cement
- Aggregate (small stones for mortar)
- A bucket or pot for the fireplace (Optional!)
- Mixing paddle
- Pallet for laying bricks
- Bricks (ideally heat resistant but not essential)
- Large sheet of cellophane
- Some old pieces of wood/foam to shape the bow
- Chipboard (if built on a pallet): Make sure it is for outdoor use; Otherwise, it would be deformed.
- Wooden pallet (1 full pallet)
- Drill
- Wood screws
- Wood saw
The exact quantities depend on the size you decide to build. You can build this oven in stages, so there is no need to know the exact quantities when you initially begin construction. Many people say that heat-resistant bricks should be used when building a kiln.
When heated to a high temperature, standard building bricks may expand and cause the kiln to crack a little. We have had this oven extremely hot and have had no problems with cracks, whether it's personal preference!
Step 2: Creating the base

When you have decided on a location for the pizza oven, place the platform down and make sure it is horizontal. The floor it sits on may not be flat, so use some pieces of wood to make a wedge under the pallet and raise it if necessary.
Use the wood saw to cut a section of the board that exactly fits the base of the pallet.
Cut some 50mm high strips of chipboard to form a perimeter around the top of the pallet. Make sure there are no large gaps between the boards as this will form the seal to hold it in the concrete.
Mix the concrete in a ratio of 1:2:4 (1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 4 parts aggregate). Use the shovel to place the concrete into the wooden mold.
You can use a long wooden stick lengthwise to ensure the concrete is flat and has the best finish. This top layer will create the floor for the pizza oven, so try to do it as smoothly as possible.
Step 3: Arrange the bricks/Size planning

It is a good idea to place the bricks approximately in the correct position before fixing them permanently in place. With the standard house brick, aconI would recommend cutting them in half so you can have more shape in your pizza oven. Arranging the bricks beforehand ensures that you know approximately where the bricks will go and also approximately how many you will need.
Step 4: Creating the arch

The arch will form the ceiling of the area where you access the interior of the oven. Generally speaking, the arch is approximately two-thirds the height of the entire oven.
We used foam to create a support, but you could use laminated cardboard or even slanted cuts of the board to create the curve that the bow rests on. This provides support only while the arch bricks are drying.
The advantage of having a curved arch rather than a flat one is that you can use the weight of the bricks supporting them to provide support (almost locking into place).
Step 5: Placing the bricks in place

The first step here is to cement the first (soil) layer of bricks in place using a fine mixture of cement and fine sand (a ratio of about 1:3 would be fine). At this stage I will also cement the arch in place.
Place the cellophane sheet on top of the base layer and begin to fill with sand. A sand mold is created from the inside of the kiln so that the bricks can rest on the sand while they are cemented into place (prevents a collapse while the cement is wet!).
The sand is wrapped in cellophane or plastic sheets to prevent the sand from sticking to the inside of the oven where there may be some wet cement.
Start putting together the bricks working on the side of the cellophane sheets. At this stage, it is good to cement the chimney in place. Having the chimney slightly higher than the door ensures that the smoke comes out of the chimney instead of out of the front of the oven. Don't worry because the cement looks a little messy. This will be sorted in the next step.
Step 6: Creating the outer concrete layer

Mix a little more concrete as in step 2. Liberally spread it all over the outside of the pizza oven. This not only makes the pizza oven look better, but it provides more insulation that will keep the oven hotter longer!
Step 7: Removing the supports and sand

Once the concrete has dried (usually a couple of days), it's time to remove the arch supports. This will provide access to the sandbag that currently still occupies the interior of the oven. Carefully tear the side of the bag and begin digging out the sand.
Once most of the sand has been removed, you can remove the entire plastic sheet and scoop out the remaining sand.
Step 8: Create fire and it's time to cook!

First, create a small fire to slowly dry the inside of the oven. By now, it should be pretty dry anyway, but starting small ensures that cracks don't form due to steam trying to escape.
After that it's time to cook!! Try some pizza and get a feel for how your oven performs. See you soon!
