How to Make a PVC Baby Bed Protector is a PVC construction that slides between the box spring and mattress on one side of the bed when my child is napping, and I can remove it when I go to bed at night. When not in use, it leans against the wall and holds the arsenal of pillows.

Two options have been made: Option A (which will be done in this article), which is for older children, with larger heads, and Option B (a new modified model and cutting diagram), for babies, and small children.

Step 1: What you need

To build this bed protector for the child, you will need the following:

• 3×10′ of 1-1/4″ PVC Pipe
• Tool for cutting PVC
• PVC cement
• Small wood screws (3/4″)
• Drill bits and drill

For Option A

• 6×1-1/4″ 90 Degree PVC Elbows
• 8×1-1/4″ PVC Tee Connections
• 3×1-1/4″ 4-way connections

For Option B

• 6 x 1-1/4″ 90 Degree PVC Elbows
• 15×1-1/4″ PVC Tee Connections
• 3×1-1/4″ 4-way connections

Optional:

• Countersink
• Steel wool
• Acetone
• Paper towels
• Mineral oil

I wanted it to be very sturdy, for obvious reasons, so I chose to use 1-1/4″ PVC pipe. There are all kinds of PVC sizes to choose from.

I'm lucky. I have a miter saw. Cuts PVC pipe amazingly. Not all do, so you can cut the pipe with a hacksaw.

I've included a quick graphic showing how I trimmed each of my 10' PVC pipe segments for both Option A and Option B below.

For Option A, it is basically (12) 17″ lengths and (12) 5.5″ lengths. For Option B use (14) 17″ lengths and (20) 2.5″ lengths.

Cut your pipe and throw it in a box with your fittings and take them somewhere you can dry them.

Step 4: Assemble

Take all your accessories and cut the pipe to an area where you can dry the pieces together before gluing them together. You need to make sure your cuts are correct before using your PVC cement.

Place your pieces on a flat surface, and assemble loosely as shown in the attached diagrams for either Option A or Option B.

For Option B, the PVC will fit into the first fitting and the second fitting, and will be VERY tight. I suggest you wait on final assembly before dry drying. Option B. Don't worry if the Option B diagram makes the shield look huge, it's not, it's just an exploded view.

Step 5: Clean the tube (optional)

This is how you do it:

• Take some steel wool and put some acetone on it.
• In a circular motion, rub the steel wool/acetone combination into the pipe and quickly cleanRemove excess ink and dirt with paper towels.
• Repeat for each pipe segment.

The acetone will evaporate and will not stay on the PVC pipe, so don't worry about it affecting your children.

Step 6: Cement it

It's time to hit! Since you have a dry fit of your cut pipe and fittings, take everything apart and prepare to use the PVC cement by taking everything outside or do it in your garage with the door open.

PVC cement is stinky and can make you dizzy if you do it in a non-ventilated place.

Apply PVC cement to BOTH the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting. Then insert the tube into the fitting and hold for 30 seconds.

Repeat this for each connection point based on the design assembly.

Step 7: Screw it in

I wanted this thing to be sturdy, so I decided to not only cement it, but also put screws in each of the connections, just to give me that extra protection. I have drilled holes at each point where the fitting meets the pipe, and on both sides of the fittings for added security.

I wanted it to be clean, so I chose to use a countersink to make a notch in each end of the fitting so my screws would sit flush. This is optional

Next, using my drill and a drill bit, I place small “set screws” (3/4″ wood screws) into each of the holes on either side of the fixture.

Step 8: Taps (optional)

Off the shelf, the PVC pipe is not a true white color and has a dull finish, so I wanted it to match the shiny look of my fixtures.

The best solution for this is to apply a VERY LIGHT coat of mineral oil to the PVC pipe between the glued and screwed fittings. Then polish with a dry paper towel. The difference is amazing and it really looks great.

Step 9: Use it

To use, simply slide the PVC bottom between the mattress and box spring. If you just place it between the two and push it as needed, the PVC will slide in. When not in use, remove it and place it against the wall.
