#1: Supplies

Materials:

• Soft wood (rescued from a wine box)
• 1 Wood Screw
• Wood glue
• Fine sandpaper

Tools:

• Japanese saw + Magnetic saw guide
• Drill
• Drill set
• Clamps
• 20mm spade bit
• Homemade wood screw
• Measuring and marking tools
• Sander

#2: Choose the size of wood, screw and holes

Technically, everything here depends on everything, but these were my basic considerations. It had to do with what I had, which made me experiment a lot.

Considerations for choosing the screw: I wanted it to be…

• 1 wood screw
• Have a wide thread
• Not too long or too short
• Head diameter no larger than the thickness of the wooden board

When choosing the piece of wood: I wanted it to be…

• Width
• Thin
• Square
• Easy to break

Considerations for choosing the size of the holes: I wanted them to be…

• Not too big, not too small
• Make it seem impossible for me to screw in the screw from the side
• It's not too big, so there would be enough wood for it not to break
• Not too small, so the screw can be seen well enough (on camera, to be honest)

#3: Drill the holes

I marked a line in the middle (height) of the piece of wood, one centimeter from both edges. Then I put one side of the paddle on the line, and marked a point right in the hole in the piece of the paddle. This was where I was going to drill the hole, as you can see in the photos.

I put a 20m drill bit inserted into my cordless drill as I needed the lightest drill I had/no annoying cord in the way. My little one is really light.

I think rectangular objects look better than square shaped objects, so... That's what I did with my hand saw and the magnetic saw guide.

#4: Break!

I clamped the piece of wood into my homemade wood screw, and...Break!

It actually wasn't that difficult. Especially not with the huge hammer I used!

#5: Screw in the screw!

First I practiced on a piece of wood and then drilled a pilot hole for the screw. I drilled the pilot hole just a little smaller than the screw threads, so the threads WOULD open up.

I didn't want the screw to be loose, and I didn't want the wood to expand, which could ruin the perfect adhesive joint.

The drill I used to drive the screw into has a really sensitive clutch that allows me to drive the screw very smoothly, without damaging or cracking the wood.

It's an alternative and another reason to add screws again in this paragraph!

#6: Glue the pieces again

I was planning on using CA glue all along, but decided to use wood glue (a weaker type than what you probably use), since it doesn't dry immediately (good when nothing goes wrong!).

I applied a small pea-sized amount to each side, and squeezed it tightly in my vise, and of course it was the perfect time for the vise to break!

After the problem was resolved, I tried getting tiny bits of glue and fine sawdust into the crack, and other random places, which I thought would help hide it.

I don't think this helped, however. It mainly made little spots that were a little darker than the wood because of the dust that was on my fingers when I applied it.

#7: Sand (more, more and more)

About an hour after gluing both pieces together, I removed the puzzle from the press and began sanding.

I think I spent about two hours sanding it (and rounding the edge), but I think I could have saved a ton of time if I had progressed through the grains instead of starting off right.

I have to admit, this looks a lot better than I thought. Pine can actually look pretty good!

#8: Done! Video!

This is a project that can only be done with wood! As far as I know. How about graphite?

Couldn't this be an amazing gift? It can be done fairly quickly with just a few tools.

If you haven't had much luck disguising the joint, how about charring the wood with fire? Just an idea that might help.
