For the delight of the little ones, a DIY wooden seesaw is sturdy and holds its own against models found in playgrounds; no interlocking joints, assembly is done only with screws, and the rocking bar can be set at two different heights. The construction of this seesaw was born from an original idea, taking inspiration from commercial models to create a customized project. We made it by cutting almost all the necessary pieces from three spruce boards measuring 170x50x4000 mm: only the two seats are cut from a 25 mm thick board. From the final measurements, it is clear that extensive planing was necessary, suggesting the starting material was deck boards with obvious surface irregularities.

Balance Seesaw

After an initial square cut of the pieces, each one was appropriately shaped according to the design: the vertical elements with rounded top ends, the horizontal ones with a partial 45° cut at the ends, and the seats with an anatomical shape for comfort. Only 4 pieces, the base crossbars and the bar reinforcements, require no further steps.

After sanding the elements and chamfering all visible edges, apply two coats of transparent wood preservative before assembly to fully protect the wood. On pieces B, C, and D, which will remain in contact with the lawn and are therefore exposed to moisture, apply a protective layer (like bitumen paint) for a thickness of 30 mm to inhibit water absorption. Building a Wooden Seesaw

First for the base and then for the rocking bar, gradually align the pieces to mark their outlines and drill pilot holes for the steel screws with a 3 mm bit. Relying on more laborious and sophisticated joining systems is not necessary: the construction is straightforward with basic tools.
