Organization is essential in any workshop, especially when it helps protect delicate and valuable items. This is the case, for example, with circular saw blades, router bits, and drill bits, which should never be piled haphazardly in drawers where they rub against each other, becoming damaged and losing their sharpness.

Well aware of these problems, our reader Fausto Aprile began building a series of DIY wooden boxes to store everything that needs to be grouped by type and protected from any collision with other metal objects.

Custom Storage for Every Tool
These DIY boxes are made to measure. For circular saw blades, you base the interior dimensions on the largest diameter blade. The inside must also include dividers to keep the blades spaced apart. The internal layout is different for router bit boxes, as bits have a short cylindrical shank and should be kept on staggered levels for easier selection and removal.
Given the success in the workshop, it wasn't difficult to also create DIY boxes for the kitchen, to safely store vegetable slicer blades that are always scattered messily in the drawer alongside ladles and knives. How to Build DIY Wooden Boxes
After cutting the various panels that form the box, start by gluing the 4 side pieces, overlapping them two by two, holding them in position with corner clamps.
- Step 1: Apply wood glue to the joints of the side panels and secure them with corner clamp tools to ensure perfect 90-degree angles while the glue dries.
- Step 2: Next, glue the remaining two panels (the bottom and any lid). Press them onto the previously assembled part using common clamps, with scrap pieces in between to distribute the force evenly. A set of quality screw clamps makes this step much easier.
- Step 3: For a clean finish, sand all edges smooth. You can add a handle or a simple finger hole for easy opening. Consider adding a coat of varnish or wood oil to protect the wood.
Essential Tools for the Project
To build your own custom storage, you'll need a few basic tools. A good circular saw or jigsaw is perfect for cutting your panels to size. For sanding, look at the sanders and sandpaper available. And don't forget a reliable tape measure and square for accurate layout.
Organizing Beyond the Workshop
The same principles apply to organizing your home. Use small wooden boxes or dividers in kitchen drawers to keep utensils and gadgets tidy. In the living room, consider bookcases and shelving units to display and organize your collections. For the bedroom, a dresser with well-organized drawers can transform your morning routine.
Outdoor Storage Solutions
Don't forget the garden! Keep your gardening tools and supplies organized with a sturdy shed or storage bench. A well-organized garden supplies area makes planting and maintenance a joy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What type of wood is best for DIY boxes?
Plywood is an excellent choice for beginners because it's stable, affordable, and easy to cut. For a more premium look, use solid wood like pine or oak. The key is to choose a wood that is straight and free of large knots.
How do I make dividers inside the box?
You can cut thin strips of wood or plywood to the exact height of your box sides. Glue them in place or cut small slots (dado joints) in the box sides for a more permanent and sturdy fit. For a modular approach, use small, removable wooden dividers.
Can I use these boxes for items other than tools?
Absolutely! These boxes are perfect for organizing kitchen utensils, cutlery, craft supplies, jewelry, office supplies, and hardware like screws and nails. The design is completely customizable to fit whatever you need to store. For a dedicated workspace, check out our desks and work surfaces.
How do I finish the boxes to protect them?
For a durable finish, apply a coat of polyurethane, varnish, or hard wax oil. For boxes that will hold food items (like in a kitchen drawer), use a food-safe mineral oil or beeswax finish. Always sand the wood smooth before applying any finish.
What if I don't have the tools to cut the wood myself?
Many home improvement stores will cut wood to your specified dimensions for a small fee. This is a great option if you don't own a saw. You can then assemble the pre-cut pieces at home using just glue and clamps. Browse our home improvement collection for all the glues and finishing supplies you need.
