The Metals Laboratory of the College of Jewelers, Goldsmiths, Watchmakers and Gemologists of Catalonia, theJORGCgets thecertification to perform platinum analysis and contrast, the most expensive and exclusive material used in jewelry, highly valued for its elegance and incredible hardness. This authorization comes from the General Directorate of Energy, Mines and Industrial Safety of the Generalitat of Catalonia and has made it possible to launch this new service that will respond to the growing demand for analysis and contrast of this material by the Catalan jewelry industry.
Obtaining this accreditation has been the result of a long process in which it has been necessary to incorporate the specific methodology for the analysis and contrast of this material and obtain the necessary equipment. To make platinum analysis viable, the JORGC has witnesses of platinum alloys, platinum-copper (950-50 thousandths) and platinum-ruthenium (960-40 thousandths), as well as official punches from the National Mint and Stamp Factory.
In this way, the JORGC opens itself to all companies and individuals, and expands its official guarantee hallmarking services for gold and silver jewelry; gold analysis by cupellation; silver analysis by potentiometry; trademark contrast of manufacturer or importer; and fluorescence analysis through the use of X-ray technology.
The use of the latter, fluorescence technology, allows jewelry to be analyzed to determine if it complies with the REACH regulations without suffering any damage. This is a vital measure for the sector, since historically sampled imports from third countries have detected cases of the presence of alloys not in accordance with said regulations. Now, the College's laboratory can quickly and reliably analyze the components of the jewelry to certify that they comply with European regulations.
On the other hand, the Gemology Laboratory, recognized by the International Confederation of Jewelers and Goldsmiths, carries out reports on diamonds, gems or colored stones and classification of diamond lots, among other things.
This represents a great step forward for this prestigious organization, always characterized by the search for the maximum guarantee of service and quality. As a result, the JORGC monitors the satisfaction of its clients every year, in order to determine the main points of quality improvement in its annual plan. Thus, in 2016, the laboratory's clients expressed high satisfaction, granting its services a score close to excellent.
