Insulated Panels: How to Install Them for DIY Thermal Insulation 2026

For a section of exterior basement wall, we used insulated panels with a terracotta brick-effect finish, achieving both thermal insulation and a finished perimeter band in one go. This system, called Isovista, consists of insulated panels with interlocking vertical edges that are glued and doweled to the masonry.

Insulated Panels for Walls

The panels are made of a layer of expanded polystyrene, ranging from 30 to 120 mm thick to meet all thermal insulation needs. The outer face is coated with 20 mm thick clay elements that replicate face bricks in various shades and textures, resistant to frost and weather. In this case, the brick finish is an “aged stone” type on 50 mm thick insulating panels.

The base corresponding to the basement was still rough and somewhat recessed compared to the living area portion, allowing enough room for the insulated panel thickness.

Before starting installation, it is recommended to fix a starting metal profile at the base of the wall, well leveled, although we used a chalk line and wedges. For fixing the panels, apply polyurethane foam adhesive along the entire perimeter of the panel, plus a few central strips, and press it into position on the wall. Drill holes for the dowels at some points in the joints, insert the anchor washers and then the nylon dowels, tightening the screws until fully expanded; the screw heads are hidden with caps.

Installation starts at two orthogonal walls, using a special preformed element that wraps around the corner.

When a panel needs to be cut to size, such as at corners, the terracotta strips are cut with a diamond blade on an angle grinder, and the polystyrene is cut with a handsaw or hot wire cutter. The cut edges are then smoothed and glued as usual.
