DIY Workbench on Wheels: Build a Mobile Workshop Station 2026

This DIY workbench is generously sized—1700 mm long, 650 mm wide, and 875 mm high—but because it's mounted on wheels, you can easily move it out of the way when not in use or place it in the middle of the room for 360-degree access, eliminating the need to constantly reposition your workpieces.

Building the Workbench Support Frame

To create this mobile DIY workbench, we started with two frames made from 50x70 mm timber, joined using half-lap joints with reinforcing dowels. More experienced woodworkers can add stability with mortise-and-tenon or flat dovetail joints (male on the crosspieces), again reinforced with transverse dowels. In the front uprights of the workbench, we drilled blind holes to insert 20 mm diameter rods for supporting panels or boards during work.

The two frames are connected at the back by two stringers—one flush with the lower crosspieces and one at the top. A panel screwed from behind against the stringers and legs stiffens the support, completed by a third stringer made of 24 mm plywood fixed to the front top of the frames. The panel protrudes 10 mm at the top and fits into a groove cut under the worktop. Three crosspieces fixed between the stringers provide additional reinforcement.

The Wooden Workbench Top

Made from 24 mm plywood (or 25 mm MDF, 30 mm blockboard, or, for the ambitious, beech laminate), the top rests on the support flush with the front stringer but overhangs at the back and left side, allowing temporary clamping of tools and machinery. The top features a row of through holes aligned with the centerline of the side vise, spaced to match the travel of the movable jaw, into which you insert bench dogs (purchased or homemade). An identical row of holes on the opposite side helps hold workpieces securely.

Attach a heavy-duty woodworking vise to the left side of the bench. For best results, mount it flush with the benchtop surface and add wooden jaws to protect your workpieces.
