Building your own minimalist nightstands is a rewarding DIY project that lets you customize size, materials, and finish to perfectly match your space. In this guide, we'll walk through a design inspired by Alex Turci, featuring two drawers per nightstand, a clean white frame, and a clever upcycled lampshade idea. Why Build Your Own Nightstands?

DIY nightstands allow you to break free from standard sizes and use more durable materials. Whether you need a taller surface for your lighting or deeper drawers for storage, building your own ensures a perfect fit. Plus, you can coordinate the finish with your existing dressers and sofas for a cohesive look.

Materials You'll Need
- 12 mm birch plywood for drawer sides and back
- 30 mm poplar plywood for the main structure
- 8 mm plywood for drawer bottoms and back panel
- Old oak boards for drawer fronts
- Beech dowels and rods (Ø 40 mm for legs)
- Wood glue, clamps, and finishing supplies
- White water-based paint and neutral wax solution
Step 1: Building the Drawers
Start by cutting the birch plywood for the drawer sides and back. Rout grooves on the outside of the sides for sliding on wooden strips, and inside at the bottom to insert the plywood base. Join the pieces with wooden dowels and PVA glue. The drawer fronts are made from reclaimed oak boards. When assembling, insert the sides between the front and back panels—rout the back panel vertically to extend the sliding guide. Clamp the drawers for 24 hours, then sand any misalignments flush with a rasp and sandpaper. Drill a hole in the center of each front for the knob.

Step 2: Constructing the Main Frame
The nightstand structure uses 30 mm poplar plywood. On the inside of each side panel, cut a rebate at the top and bottom to fit the top and base panels between them. Rout the back edge of all four panels to insert the 8 mm plywood back before mounting the base. After final assembly with dowels and glue, create a frame using beech strips cut at 45° angles to hide the plywood layers and joints. Attach with glue and pin nails.
Consider adding wall decor above your nightstands or a mirror to complete the space.
Step 3: Attaching the Legs
Cut four legs from a Ø 40 mm beech rod using a miter saw (200 mm each). Drill a hole in the center of each leg and insert double-threaded dowels—the wood-threaded side goes into the leg, the machine-threaded side into the base. This provides a sturdy, removable connection.

Step 4: Finishing Touches
Apply a white water-based finish to the frame and legs, and a neutral wax solution to the drawer fronts. For a creative lighting idea, upcycle old loafers into lampshades: insert a lamp holder and bulb, running the wire through the side of the shoe. This unique touch adds character to your lighting scheme.
FAQ
1. Can I customize the nightstand dimensions?
Absolutely! DIY allows you to adjust height, width, and depth to fit your bed frame and room layout. Just recalculate your material cuts accordingly.
2. What type of wood is best for beginners?
Poplar and birch plywood are excellent choices—they're affordable, easy to cut, and take paint well. For drawer fronts, reclaimed oak adds a beautiful contrast.
3. How do I ensure the drawers slide smoothly?
Precise routing of the grooves and using wooden strips as runners will ensure smooth operation. Sand the runners lightly and apply wax for extra glide.
4. Can I use this design for other furniture?
Yes! Scale the design to create bookcases, display shelving, or even a desk by adjusting dimensions and adding more drawers.
5. What tools do I need?
A miter saw, router, clamps, drill, and sandpaper are essential. A brad nailer and doweling jig will make assembly easier.
