Learn How to Build a Cool Cabin Bed for Kids, we combine cabin details with kid-friendly scale to create an indoor living space with a built-in bed. Featuring board, batten and kiln-dried fir wood or the ever-useful and friendly plywood design, our Cabin Bed is designed for both sleeping and playing.

Front with two windows and a door, windowed and topped with a classic slatted roof. So we worked to design the bed to be built from plywood.

We also worked together to create a design that could be easily assembled and disassembled. We both loved that the panel design divided the bed into sections to work with, and then each panel is something you can still manage on your own.

Do you want to build it? You can do it! Here we show you the steps on how to do it:

Materials:

• 1 Sheet of ¾” plywood, cut into 2 to 12″ wide strips and 1 to 23″ wide strips, all 8 feet long
• 17 Boards – 2×4 @ 8 feet long
• 6 Boards – 2x2 @ 8 feet long
• 2 Boards – 1×2 @ 8 feet long
• 1 Board – 1x3 at 4 feet long
• 2 Boards – 1x6 @ 10 feet long and 4 – 1x6 @ 10 feet long
• 2 3/4″ self-tapping screws
• 1-1/4″ finishing screws or nails (for attaching roof slats and window trim), 2″ or similar screws for attaching bed slats, 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws
• 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws
• Wood glue
• Wood filler

Tools:

• Carpenter's square

Dimensions:

Size for double mattress.

Cut List:

Cut ¾" plywood into two strips 8 feet long by 12" wide. Cut remaining piece 23” wide (for front panels).

Side Panels:

• 2 – 2×4 @ 11-3/4″ (Center of frame).
• 4 – 2×4 @ 63-7/16″ Cut one end at 30 degrees from square bevel, SHORT point measurement.
• 6 – 2×4 @ 35″ 2 – 2×4 @ 19-5 /16″ Both ends cut at 30 degrees from square bevel, measuring from long point to short point.
• 4 – 2×4 @ 10″ long (see steps for additional cutting instructions).
• 2 – ¾” plywood @ 12″ x 35″.

Rear Panel:

• 2 – 2×4 @ 63-7/16″ One end cut 30 degrees from square bevel, LONG point measurement
• 3 – 2×4 @ 71-1/2″
• 1 – ¾” Plywood @ 12″ x 71-1/2″

Front Panel:

• 2 – 2×4 @ 63-7/16″ One end cut 30 degrees from square bevel, LONG point measurement
• 2 – 2×4 @ 71-1/2″
• 2 – 2×4 @ 45-9/16″
• 1 – ¾” Plywood @ 23″ x 45-9/16″

Window Adjustment:

• 2 – 1×3 @ 18″
• 4 – 1×2 @ 18-3/4″
• 2 – 1×2 @ 18″
• 2 – 1×2 @ 17″

Roof:

• 1 – 2×4 @ 75″ (Crest)
• 4 – 2×2 @ 71-1/2″ (Make sure it can fit inside the ceiling easily)
• 26- 1×6 @ 23-3/4″

Bed slat or slat system:

• 2 – 2×2 @ 71-1/2″
• 10 – 2×4 @ 38″ (You can use different materials less or more depending on the mattress)

Step 1:

Cut out the center frame pieces as shown. Use a saw to cut.

Step 2:

Attach the plywood panel to two of the 2x4s that are 35″ long with ¾” pocket holes and 1-1/4″ pocket screws on the back, with everything flush toward the back.

Also drill pocket holes in the plywood and 2x4 panel to attach to the legs. Attach to the legs with pocket hole screws, leaving 10″ of space under the bottom 2x4, the 2x4s are flush on the outside.

Design the top pieces. ColoMake the remaining 2x4 35″ long to center the 2x4s with notch, and corresponding centers.

Place the beams and screw to the legs. Use 2-3/4″ screws or 2-1/2″ pocket screws. Create two that match exactly.

Step 3:

Add beams inside the side headers. Screw from outside with 2-3/4″ screws to secure.

Step 4:

First attach the plywood panel to the 71-1/2″ 2x4s, as you did with the side panels.

Remember to drill pocket holes (3/4″ in the plywood, 1-1/2″ in the 2x4s) to attach them to the legs.

Leave a 10″ space under the panel and secure it to the legs with pocket hole screws. Attach the 2x4 to the legs. Everything is flush with the interior.

Step 5:

Cut window openings from ¾” plywood panels using a drill bit to start, and a saw to cut.

Sand any rough edges. Drill pocket holes around all sides of the plywood panel.

Drill 1-1/2″ pocket holes in the ends of 2x4s as needed. Screw together to create the front.

Step 6:

Trim out the windows with 1x boards. Nail with 1-1/4″ finishing nails.

Step 7:

Fill all pocket holes in the panels. Paint or finish as desired. When assembling, screw from the INSIDE of the four panels to create the bed with 2-3/4″ screws.

Step 8:

Attach the trusses to the inside end and screw with 2-3/4″ screws.

Step 9:

Construct the bed slat system using 2-3/4″ screws to attach the slats to the side panels, flush with the bottom of the side panels.

Add slats to the top and screw them together.

Step 10:

Build the roof system by laying down 1x6 boards with 2x2s on top. Attach with screws, leaving ¾” of space between roof slats.

In installation, place the ceiling panel. You must screw the 2x2 top to the main post of the structure for adequate strength.

Step 11:

You can add 1x2s to the plywood for joining, attach the slats with 1-1/4″ nails and glue.
