Today we bring you theEdox Hydro-Sub Reviewin its two versions, automatic and quartz. In both “engines” it is a watch in the range below €1,500, an area of tough competition where almost all brands have taken positions fighting for a very important part of the market in terms of volume. Edox is another of those century-old brands with little media impact, probably because it does not invest as much in advertising as others, at least in the Spanish market... although this has changed recently thanks to the sagacity of Rojas, the distributor ofEdoxfor Spain. And I say sagacity because he noticed Mireia Belmonte, the young elite swimmer and now in the sporting Olympus, just before she emerged as a record-devouring phenomenon. Her presentation as brand ambassadorIt took place last September and is, at the time of writing this article, on the front page of all sports news programs.
El Edox Hydro-SubIt is a sports watch without compromises. Surprisingly, its 46 mm diameter and 14 mm height seem smaller once placed on the wrist, to which a relatively thin but extremely comfortable bracelet topped by a sophisticated safety clasp that keeps the set in place contributes decisively. The links of this bracelet are all of the same size, which makes it easy to change and exchange them if necessary. The pins are snap-on and appropriate instruments (punch, hammer, arm changer support) are needed to adjust the measurement. The closure is a small work of engineering in itself, no less remarkable because it is extended: double push-button and locking loop.
security and a diving extension that can be manipulated with two fingers, without having to remove the watch from the wrist. By the way, during my visit to Switzerland I mentioned to those responsible for the brand that this armis seemed like a small thing to me, that it detracted from the whole due to its flimsy appearance: I must publicly rectify because I have understood that a thicker armis would not necessarily be better but it would unbalance the balance achieved and would certainly make the Hydro-Sub heavier.
We now come to what is the hallmark and what we like most in theEdox Hydro-Sub Review: the Master Lock or “master closure” that protects the already protected crown – threaded, in addition – from more or less accidental hits. Being a watch designed for diving (500m) it is appreciated to be able to not worry about such a vulnerable part although, as I say, the shoulders of the case itself would already be enough protection. This Master Lock slides cleanly along the handle, stopping in each of the two positions (open/closed) thanks to some kind of hidden strap.
that prevents it from being halfway. Made of aluminum, it has a secure grip that allows it to be moved without difficulty either with the tip of the finger or with a nail, although it is clear that to manipulate the crown you must have the watch in your hands, it cannot be done from the position placed on the wrist. It exists in several colors to match the second hand, green, orange, gray and red. Automatic models come in black or orange.
Being that it is a reissue of a previous watch (1965) with the same name, its shapes could only be "seventies": a forceful cushion-type case with integrated lugs, as if it were sculpted from a single block of steel... well, in reality *it is* sculpted from a single block, only in these cases it would seem that it is half sculpted due to the amount of steel left in it. The combined polishing work (general brushing and mirroring on the chamfered edges) is attractive and clearly marks the volumes. As mentioned above, it has a diameter of 46mm without counting the clasp, which would increase the figure to 49.22mm between lugs. Between the 120-click unidirectional bezel and the case itself, an insert made of what I assume is anodized aluminum has been placed to match the color of the Master Lock closure. Another bezel, this fixed one, dodecagonal in shape and mirror polished, secures the flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, which provides magnificent visibility at most angles although I have not tested the refraction underwater. The bottom is blind - as it should be in a 500 meter diver - and has an engraved world map seen from the zenith above the North Pole, which is where soon (February 2015) Christian Redl aka iceman will try to beat the world record for freediving in frozen waters... wearing a special edition Hydro-Sub.

In its automatic version it has an ETA 2824 movement of which the level of finish is not specified, although in the limited series launched on the occasion of Redl's feat it is said to be COSC. As for the quartz version, and true to the statement that all their watches are Swiss, the movement chosen is a Ronda. The visual difference between both versions is seen in the indexes, which are narrower in the quartz. The fact that there is more color variety in the latter gives an idea of where Edox expects to have the most sales. The price of the quartz model in Spain is €990 and the automatic model is €1,490, while the limited edition Christian Redl North Pole limited to 350 units will be €2,490.
