With the collaboration stage with Eterna already closed, Porsche Design presented during the last Baselworld 2016 fair Eternity, the last component - for now - of the 1919 Datetimer collection with the Eternity Black Edition model. In October 2015, part of this collection was already advanced with the Series 1 and Globetimer models with GMT function. This is yet another decline of the box, with its characteristic handles that are now the house's trademark, this time with a more minimalist dial if possible.

Like the other models, the1919 Datetimer Eternity Black EditionIt will mount a Sellita SW 200 movement with the rotor or oscillating weight engraved with the Porsche Design logo, although it cannot be seen due to the blind case back. One detail that I personally appreciate is that the caliber is mentioned by name instead of trying to mask it with abstruse “Pd-7M54.00 caliber” style names. From my point of view, this gives an idea of the brand's intentions: we are designers, not watchmakers. Like so many others but at least these say it and I appreciate it.

The finishes are the strong points of Porsche Design. Unlike the previous stage, when under its license Eterna ordered watches to be manufactured in China, it is now manufactured in Solothurn (Switzerland) under the direct control of the brand. Without going into evaluating the –good- results that can be achieved in the East, the watches1919 Datetimer Eternity Black Editionof the collection made of titanium convey the sensation – always subjective – of “being well made” and as an example I would put the crown with an excellent look and feel.

The titanium bracelets, both in their natural version and in black DLC, are a true tribute to the memory of Ferdinand A. Porsche who designed the first watches in these materials and with those shapes for IWC, Orfina and others. The rubber bracelets are complemented by a folding clasp topped by a fully functional buckle, making it difficult to manipulate. Perhaps the folks at Porsche Design should keep an eye on that.

Prices range from €2,950 for the natural titanium version with rubber strap to €3,550 for the titanium version with black DLC treatment with bracelet, although in September the dark titanium version with crocodile strap will arrive that will raise the bar to €3,950. A price range heavily populated by brands with greater implementation or public recognition, so it will not be easy. Although he does not lack merits.
