All in all, this ended up being a pretty easy build with only a few items to purchase and not many tools needed. Step 1:

The type of wood purchased depends on the end use. Pine is soft (easier to scratch), but it is inexpensive and easy to stain. Oak will cost a little more and is a little harder than pine, so you'll get a little more durability.

Cutting the wood: The white pine step was cut to 33″ x 7 1/8″ each. I left an extra 1/8″ on the first cut of each and then finished cutting both sides afterwards. The side moldings are 7 1/4″ long each and the front edge is 34 1/2″ long.

Step 2: Join the wood

To join the wood, I used some Dowel Biscuits for better alignment of the top surface and then applied wood glue freely. Wipe away anything sticking out at the top. Pine stepping is usually very straight and smooth, so you should get a good enough surface both ways. Add some pocket screws with a Drill and Cut Jig/Jig (Kreg) for the warm fuzzy feeling of strength. Once the wood is attached, and the glue is dry, finish cutting the side(s) as needed to create smooth edges with a total length of 33″.

Add the border to the sides and front with glue and nail in place. The bottom part doesn't matter much since you can't see it. In addition to nailing the trim pieces to the top pieces, also attach the trim pieces by adding 2 nails to each end of the front molding.

Step 3: Finishing

Drilling: You can now add the two holes for the steel cable to pass through the top of the desk. They should be 14″ from the back edge of the desk and 32″ apart. Use a drill bit that is just larger than the steel wire and make sure things stay as stiff as possible.

Sanding: Once everything is attached, nailed and dried, you can start sanding everything. Start with a coarser piece of sandpaper (80-120) and work your way up to very fine (220).

Finish: Apply 1 coat of Dark Minnut Minwax oil-based stain with a rag (you can use a brush if desired). Be sure to wipe away any excess stain to prevent it from building up on the wood. After the stain dries completely, apply several coats of Polyacrylic Primer, sanding with 220 grit between each coat.

Step 4: Mounting to the wall

Assemble the L-brackets: First, determine the desired height of your desk andMark the bottom surface with a pencil. Install the L-brackets to the wall studs (spaced every 16″, brackets should be 32″ apart) with the top surface of the L-brackets aligned with the mark on the wall (use a level).

Assemble the top brackets: Before mounting, add the wire loops (they come with the steel cable kit) as they are not easy to add once the brackets are screwed on. Measure 15″ from the top of the L. Position the brackets and install the rope loops with their centers at the 15″ mark, spaced 32″ apart. Use a level to make sure everything is in line before screwing.

Step 5: Assemble the desk and add the steel wire

To install the desk, have someone hold the front edge while you screw the L-brackets into the bottom of the desk with the provided screws. Next, pass the steel cable through one of the brackets and clamp it in place with a few inches extending beyond the first clamp. Pass the steel cable through the first hole, along the bottom of the desk, up through the other hole, through two clamps, around the loop, and down through the two clamps. Cut the steel wire to the desired length.

The difficult part is trying to tension the cable. This step requires a little trial and error, but my best recommendation is to make one side as tight as possible without bending the L-brackets (use a level), and then work on the other side by tightening the clamps with some force. In the end, you should have some tension on your cable so that they take some of the force off the desk. Use a level to make sure everything looks good and finally enjoy your handiwork.
