An effective way to patch large holes in drywall, large holes in drywall (aka anything larger than 6 inches wide) are a little more difficult to fix than your usual small holes. They're too big for a patch like the ones we used before, so you'll actually need to buy a panel of drywall and patch your hole with that. The one we will show was in our garage when we moved in. I think someone might have hit him with their car.

To fix them, you will need the following tools / materials:
- Drywall
- Pencil
- Criteria
- Utility knife (this is our favorite...we use it for many projects)
- Serrated knife
- 150 grit sandpaper on a sanding block
- Electric screwdriver (the best of all)
- Screws
- Mesh Plaster Tape
- Joint compound
- A bendy spatula (having two makes it easier)
Procedure
Step 1 – Cut Damaged Drywall for New Drywall

First you need to make a hole around your hole. What I know seems counterintuitive, but it will allow you to patch it with a piece of the drywall you bought.

Our hole was really big, and the panel we bought was 2 feet x 2 feet, so we held the panel over the hole and traced it, that way we knew it would fit.
Step 2: Attach New Drywall

Now it's time to attach your piece of drywall as a patch. You must attach it to something solid. If you have studs behind your hole like we do, you can screw it into those.

If you don't have studs, you'll need to grab a piece of 1×4 and drive it into the hole on the back of the drywall with 1-1/4" drywall screws. So instead of screwing the piece of drywall into the studs, you'll screw it into that.
Step 3: Mesh Drywall Tape and Joint Compound

Then we used the drywall tape to tape it around the four edges around the patch. It comes on a roll and is slightly adhesive. It helps the joint compound adhere to the gaps.

Get some joint compound on your putty knife and press it onto your patch, starting in the center and working it out, making sure to go at least a couple inches past the patch. Let it dry overnight and then come back and do a second coat. Basically, you will repeat the previous steps. First sand over any rough spots and clean them. Then apply another coat of joint compound.
Step 4: Paint, finish and enjoy!
