1. Determine what type of floor structure you have under the wall where you plan to install siding. If it is a concrete slab on grade, you are good to go. 3. Buy the brick. The brick will cost less if you buy it by the cube instead of buying individual brick. A cube has approximately 500 bricks. This may vary depending on the size of brick you choose.
4. Cut the brick in half lengthwise. You will need a wet saw for this operation. There are some cheap ones that should work for you.
5. Remove any baseboard, wood trim or flooring material from the wall. If you don't plan to replace it, you'll want to protect the remaining floor - this is a complicated process. Make this with plastic and plywood or cardboard.
6. Disconnect power to wall receptacles, boxes or switches and free electrical boxes so they can move flush with the new wall. You may be able to find and install extensions or deep drywall rings into existing electrical boxes. These will flush with the new wall without having to move them.
7. If you plan to install a TV or other heavy items on the wall, you will want to install a lock to support the weight. If you are installing a TV wall rack, you will want to extend the wiring from an existing receptacle to a new power box behind the TV. You will also want to install boxes for data wiring for the TV. You don't want to do all this work just to hang ugly wires through your brick to run them to the TV.
8. Start by covering the back of about 6 half bricks with thin tile adhesive using a notched trowel. Place a layer of mortar on the floor enough for about three or four bricks. Some mortar, one side of one of your bricks coated in adhesive. Place the brick on the mortar bed and press it firmly against the wall. Be careful not to place mortar behind the brick as it will interfere with its adhesion to the wall. I found that spraying each brick with a small amount of water helps adhere the mortar to the brick. Check the level of the brick with a torpedo level. You can use a higher level as you progress.
9. As you progress in your race, you will want to temporarily place nails in the wall on each side and pull a rope to teach straight alignment to help keep the course straight. Make sure the nails you are connecting to the rope are level by taking measurements from the floor or ceiling (assuming they are level).
10. You will want to have some type of mechanical attachment from your sheet metal to the wall structure behind it. This brick is very heavy and you should not rely on the adhesive alone on the drywall to hold it together. Mechanically fasten the wall to the framing by installing a 2-1/2″ screw into each stud and allowing the screw to protrude into one of the mortar joints about an inch. When setting the mortar bed for the next course, the mortar surrounds the head of the screw and quickly secures it to the structure. These screws should be installed every 16″ vertically (which is approximately every 5 plates). Use deck screws that are coated with a rust-inhibiting coating and have a running thread that bites firmly into the bolt.
11. Be sure to clean and arrange the mortar joints as you progress. ThisIt is much easier to do before the mortar is set. If you're going for a vintage look, you may want to remove some of the mortar in random places to make the wall look like it's been there for a long time. This will also give the wall some depth and texture.
12. When you have finished laying the brick, clean the wall with a 20% muctic acid/80% water solution and a stiff brush. Clean the wall from top to bottom. This will remove any mortar and hazing residue from the brick. Wear protective gloves when working with this solution as it is very caustic. You may also want to ventilate the room depending on the size area you are working on, as acid fumes can be harmful. You can seal the wall if you want after the wall has dried after cleaning.
