Football Goal Made of PVC Pipes, with the excitement of the World Cup on our minds locked in cubicles, we decided to make some suitable goals for our games.

Thus, plans were born for our PVC soccer goal, which were much easier to move around than full-size goals, and didn't cause us to "waste" players by needing someone in the goal.

We decided on the 1 1/2″ PVC, and I think these are a little sturdier than store-bought bows, and provide some flexibility for sizing in case our little game expands.

Step 7 also shows an even cheaper alternative. 

Step 1: Tools and Supplies

Tools you will need:

• Hand saw
• PVC glue
• Drill w/bit slightly larger than wire
• Pliers and/or wire cutters
• Roll of tape
• Tape measure
• Sketch
• Nylon cord (if you plan to make your own net)

You will need at least:

• 6 PVC pipes, rounded corners
• 4 PVC T Connectors
• 1 1/2″ PVC pipe (quantity depends on size, approximately 50' for 5'x8' design)
• 14 gauge galvanized steel wire (approximate)

5′ x 10′ design ready:

• 4 90 Degree 3 Way PVC Connectors
• 4 45o internal elbows.
• 2 90 degree joints
• 1/2″ PVC pipe (quantity depends on size, approximately 60′ for 5’x10′ design shown)

As for PVC size, I guess it's worth mentioning that you should have connectors that match the PVC size you've chosen.

The original bows (not my design) use 1 1/2″ PVC, however, I find 1 1/4″ is almost as strong, plus it is a bit lighter and about $1.00 cheaper per 10′ tube.

The smaller the size, the cheaper it will be, but that starts to be offset by the rigidity with which the goals will play.

It's also worth noting that you may need to order connectors online, depending on what you find at local hardware stores.

Step 2: Making the cut

Once you've decided on a plan, you'll need to cut your PVC pipe to the correct sizes.

A hand saw will work fine, although I had to substitute a hacksaw after I couldn't find mine in the garage.

It's important to make straight cuts, so your tubing fits snugly into the connectors, and when you drill holes to reinforce it later, you won't accidentally puncture the end of the insert.

Step 3: Put them together

Now that the pieces are cut, it's time to glue everything together.

I recommend putting it together without glue to make sure everything fits correctly before you start.

Once they are together, separate a joint and place the cement on both the inside of the connector and the outside of the pipe.

Place the tube in place and make sure it is positioned as far into the connector as possible.

Once you have everything glued, check all the joints and let them set up for a while.

Step 4: Strengthen connections

After playing with our pipes a few times, the PVC glue began to fail on some of the most stressed joints.

Our first attempt to rectify this tape, which is the only time I've heard that the tape didn't fix a problem.

Tired of trying to fix the tubes every time we played, I decided that a galvanized cable would solve the problem permanently.

The tape over the top of the cable helps protect hands and soccer balls from entering the pointy ends, as well as adding a bit of style.

When drilling and connecting the cable, always run towards the back of the targets.

If you wanted targets you could collapse into, you could also replace the strategic joints with screws that could be taken apart when you were done.

Step 5: Adding the Network

Initially, we bought some cheap fishing net and cut it to the right size and used zip ties to connect it to the PVC.

However, we quickly learned that the zip ties broke and rendered our nets almost useless after playing a couple of times.

Step 6: Design Flaw/Fix

A few extra joints don't affect functionality, but will add some cost to your project.

Instead, the glitch we noticed after several games was that occasionally a shot would hit the top of the support bars and bounce back.

Unless you had tracked the shot, it often looked like it had hit the crossbar and would still be in play.

Many times the shooter was the only one who could really tell if it was a good goal or not.

If this is a problem, you can add a gasket (or two) to this support bar that allows the top to move back 90 degrees to avoid confusion in the game.

You will want to do this before gluing and tying them together.

That will allow shots to hit the back of the goal that everyone should be able to easily discern.

Step 7: Alternative Design

The alternative layout is explained quite well.

The crossbar and back support are uncut 10′ posts, the uprights and base runners are four 5′ lengths (two tubes cut in half.

Next, I cut four 6″ segments to add between the base and crossbars between the 45° elbow.

That left diagonal supports approximately 74″.

I think the smaller pipe would work well for kids, but teens and adults would probably want to spend a little more and use a thicker pipe.

It costs a little more, but the extra robustness is worth it.

Another advantage of this design is that by simply removing the crossbar and backrest, it is very easy to store in a garage.

Step 8: PVC Side Project (Optional)

I had some leftover pieces of 1/2″ PVC pipe, and decided they would make good corner poles. This inspiration came to me after taking apart a solar light that didn't work.

I found that the stake part came off easily and could be attached to the PVC pipe with a simple T cut on the end.

Since you are sawing, be careful,I ended up with a nice little gash on my thumb for my efforts.

It looks like some kind of spear at this point, I need something to show which direction the wind is blowing and make it more visible.

I simply tied a band to the top similar to the top of an NFL field goal post.

Flags are traditional for the top of the corner stick, and if I happen to have a robot patch that can be instructed, I think it would be quite risky in the center.

You can use anything really, like part of a t-shirt, a plastic trash sack, whatever, you can tie it to the top and make it visible.

Step 9: Have fun!

The work is done, now for the fun! Simply take your newly built rig to the nearest yard, a field, even a parking lot and try out your creation(s). Greetings!
