NSW Health Urges: Avoid Hospital Unless Life in Danger

The New South Wales health minister has urged the public to avoid hospital unless life might be in danger after a record day for Sydney emergency departments. With nearly 10,000 presentations on a single winter day, the system is under unprecedented strain, and officials are asking residents to consider alternative care options for non-life-threatening conditions.

Record Emergency Department Pressure in Sydney

On Monday, just under 10,000 people presented to emergency departments across Sydney, marking the biggest ever recorded winter day in the state's history. This was approximately 1,000 more than the average daily presentations, placing immense pressure on healthcare staff and resources. The hardest-hit areas include western and south-western Sydney, where demand has surged due to respiratory illnesses.

In addition to ED presentations, there were 4,100 ambulance callouts, which exceeded predictions by a significant margin. Health Minister Ryan Park emphasized that this level of demand demonstrates the strain on the health system, and he urged the public to reserve emergency departments for genuine emergencies only.

Why the Surge in Winter Illnesses?

The current spike is driven by a combination of influenza, COVID-19, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). According to the latest NSW Health respiratory surveillance report, influenza and RSV are at moderate levels, while COVID-19 remains low. However, ED presentations for influenza have been hovering around 400 per week, with 2,509 notified cases in the same period. These numbers, while below the peaks of previous years, are still significant and contributing to the overload.

What Should You Do Instead of Going to the ED?

Health Minister Park advises that unless your life is at risk, you should avoid the emergency department. Instead, use Healthdirect, a free phone service that connects you with registered nurses for advice and referrals. Urgent care services, which operate from 8am to 8pm, are also available for non-life-threatening conditions that still require prompt attention.

  • Call Healthdirect at 1800 022 222 for 24/7 nurse advice.
  • Visit an urgent care service for injuries or illnesses that need same-day care but are not emergencies.
  • Consult your GP or pharmacist for minor ailments like colds, sore throats, or mild flu symptoms.
  • Only call triple zero (000) for life-threatening emergencies like chest pain, severe bleeding, or difficulty breathing.

Government Response: Permanent Command Centre

In response to the crisis, the NSW government has announced a permanent command centre to coordinate peak hospital demands during winter. This centre will work with the 17 local health districts and NSW Ambulance to redirect patients away from overcrowded EDs. Additionally, operational hours for some hospital services will be extended to evenings and weekends to better manage patient flow.

This proactive approach aims to alleviate pressure on emergency departments while ensuring that patients with urgent needs still receive timely care. The government is also exploring extending urgent care service hours beyond the current 8am-8pm window.

  • Use Healthdirect for immediate nurse advice.
  • Urgent care services are ideal for sprains, minor infections, or flu symptoms that need same-day attention.
  • Prepare for the winter season by getting vaccinated against flu and COVID-19.

FAQ

When should I go to the emergency department?

Go to the ED only if you have life-threatening symptoms such as chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of consciousness. If in doubt, call Healthdirect for advice.

What is Healthdirect and how does it help?

Healthdirect is a free 24/7 phone service (1800 022 222) that connects you with registered nurses who can assess your symptoms and direct you to the most appropriate care, whether that's a GP, urgent care, or emergency services.

Are urgent care services free?

Many urgent care services are bulk-billed for Medicare cardholders, meaning they are free. However, it's best to check with the specific service before visiting, as some may charge a gap fee.
