Gift 1: Candle holder and Matches

• The first one is really simple. You will need a block of wood, tea lights and some matchboxes.
• I started by making a notch for the matchbox in the center of one end.
• Then I took it to my table saw and used a simple jig to carve out the notch, adjusting my fence a bit until I had all the material covered. After some light sanding, I did a test fit with the matchbox and it was just right.
• Then I took it to the drill and used a 1 ½ inch Forstner bit to drill the hole for the tea light, making sure not to go too deep. You want to keep the edge of the metal insulation above the wood.
• Then I sanded and applied a little oil, and that's it!

Gift 2: Put it all together

The following is a trick to "catch" all the contents of your pockets.

• I started with a thin backer board and glued the edges before applying 2 coats of white paint. You can decorate this however you like. I went with a sticker and then sealed it with a clear water-based polyethylene.
• While it was drying, I cut 4 thin strips of walnut. Using a stop block on my miter saw, I cut in all 4 pieces so they were all the same length. Because it's so small, I was able to simply use some painters tape for the glue I previously applied, then folded it all over and sealed the last corner with a little more tape, making sure to wipe off all the excess glue while it's still wet.
• Okay, back to my backing board, I removed the tape and applied some glue to the back of the frame, then used some spring clamps to hold it up while it dried.
• I cleaned up the base of my router table by trimming the square edges with a flush fit bit.

Next is a staircase. This is one of my favorites! All you need are 2 two-by-threes and a couple of tacos.

• I started by marking my 2 by 3s at 5 feet long and cut them to size. My wood is in a pretty rough shape, so I spent a lot of time sanding, progressively going from a low grit to a higher grit to make it nice and smooth.
• Then I marked the location of my 5 ladder rungs: the first at 6 inches and then every 12 inches. Then I found the center of the board and marked it with a punch.
• I used the depth stop on my drill to make the holes at a constant depth (about 3/4 inch) and made the holes with a Forstner bit that matches the size of the dowel I'm using (on mycase, 7). / 8).
• Using a stop block, cut 5 dowel pieces to 14 inches. It's a good idea to sand the ends a little to make adjustment easier. The glue is super simple if you start with one side and then apply it to the other side. Just make sure you have your tweezers ready.
• To finish, I applied some wood finish and used a polyester wipe as a finishing coat.

Gift 4: Plywood Ring

Next is a simple but elegant plywood ring. For this I'm using ¾ inch Baltic birch plywood.

• I started by making a small hole with a punch. Using that as a center point, I used a compass to draw a circle.
• In the drill press I started by drilling a hole all the way down the center with a small drill bit. This will show me where the exact center is so I can drill halfway with a Forstner bit and then flip it over and finish from the other side, avoiding any possible leaking.
• To shape the ring, I started by cutting the block as close to the line as possible, before taking it to the sander and sanding it down to the line around it.
• After that, I used some tape so I could hold the ring in place a little and I used my drill to help me sand the ring. I moved progressively to finer grain paper and made sure to round the outside edges as I went.
• To finish, I applied several coats of oil.

Gift 5: Pencil Holder

Next is a plywood pencil holder.

I'm using Baltic Birch plywood again for this because I love the look of the end grain.

• I cut 4 equal pieces and made a sandwich by gluing them all together.
• After the block was dry, I used a chisel to clean up some of the dried glue before running it through my jointer to square the faces, which I did on both sides.
• Then I squared off the end with my miter saw and cut a first block. Now you can stop here, but I used my Router table to round all the edges.
• After spacing the holes, I used my drill press with the depth stop set at about 2 inches and drilled all the holes.
• All that's left is a little sanding and a few coats of polyester to clean.

Gift 6: Business Card Holder

• I started by cutting some pieces and arranging them in a pattern I liked. After a quick gluing, I ran it through the planer several times on both sides to level it out.
• Then I squared off the ends with my miter saw and cut some random sized blocks.
• On the table saw, I tilted the knob slightly, maybe 5 or10 degrees. I then ran the block several times, adjusting my fence slightly with each pass, to make a thin, shallow groove.
• After some sanding, I also finished this with a few coats of Tung oil. That's all about it!
