I have always tried to give my birds a nice and interesting birdhouse, so today we will show you a great idea that you can do for your birds.
However, I spend so much time building and decorating them that I simply displayed them in my workshop, rather than letting animals and the weather destroy them.
Supplies:
- 6 foot 1x10 pine board
- Wood glue
- Spray Paint
- A 1-1/4″ screw
- Blue ribbon
- Adhesive label (optional)
Tools:
- table saw
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Sander
- Screwdriver
- Clamps
- Printer (optional)
Steps to make a bird house:
Step 1: Cut the sides

My birdhouse was made from six 9″ squares with 45 degree bevels on each side. You could certainly build the box using straight cuts and butt joints if you wish, adjusting the dimensions of the sides to obtain a cube.
I tilted the table saw at 45 degrees, then positioned the fence so it was 9″ from the point where the blade exits the board. I cut all four sides to form a square and repeated 5 more times. I recommend Wixey Magnetic Digital Angle Gauge for accurate bevel cuts. First, close it on the flat saw table and then stick it on the blade to set the correct angle.
I selected a piece for the front of the birdhouse and drilled a 1.5″ hole, which is suitable for bluebirds.
Note: Birds are picky about the size of their birdhouses and holes. Find out what types of birds are in your area, then look up a birdhouse dimension chart to find a properly sized house for your birds. Also, birds don't need a perch, so get rid of the peg, it will just embarrass them.
Step 2: Assemble

I glued the front piece and 3 other pieces together with blue tape for holding pressure. I made sure the edges were flush and the box was square. After gluing on the top, I added cross bracing across the bottom opening so I could screw the bottom on. I used my Trim Router to place a 1/8″ turntable in the corners.
Note: When making a birdhouse, it is a good idea to have a way to open it so you can clean it.
Step 3: Cut the cube lines

To make it look like a Rubik's Cube, I set the height of the table saw blade to about 1/4″ and cut some shallow slots 1/3 of the way across in the box. My box was 9″ so I put up the fence. about 3″ away from the blade.
Step 4: Drill holes at the bottom

It is a good idea to add drainage holes to the bottom of a birdhouse. I drilled some holes into the slots in the bottom piece. I also drilled a countersunk hole in the center of the bottom so I could screw it into the box.
Step 5: Paint the sides

I used yellow spray paint, red, blue, green, white and orange to paint the sides of the cube. Tape some paper towels to prevent spray from landing on previously painted sides.
Note: Birds stay away from bright colors, like red or orange. I'm not sure if that's true or if it was just a troll, but you can't build a Rubik's Cube Birdhouse without them! Just keep in mind that if you want to put yours outside for the birds, do some research on this "tip" and maybe you should paint the front a different color.
Step 6: Paint the grooves

I masked the grooves and painted them black to make it look more like a Rubik's cube. I recommend using a paper other than kitchen paper to block the paint as the paint soaked in and bled a little. Although it was easily scraped off with a razor blade.
Step 7: Paint the corners

I used regular copy paper to mask the corners and also painted them black. The copy paper did a much better job of blocking the paint than the paper towels. Removing the mask to reveal the finished paint job was so satisfying!
Step 8: Finished, our bird house!

I printed the original Rubik's Cube logo on a sticker and stuck it in the white square center. Since I'm only going to show this birdhouse, I made a little triangle for it.
If I were really going to put this outside for birds, I would probably tape it to a tree or fence. I felt bad that the birds couldn't use it, so I made them some less time-consuming birdhouses out of cedar fence boards.
