Independent Rainwater Collector 2026

Independent Rainwater Collector, our design is like a flexible inverted umbrella. It is an autonomous rain collector independent of the water network, trees and/or roofs. Our product provides people with rainwater, shade and a place to talk to each other.

The tank at the bottom stores the water and is made with a table so people can gather around the rain catcher and have a beer, while standing in the shade or out of the rain.

!!!WARNING!!!

• The water is not drinkable! Use only to water plants. It can be toxins from the canvas that end up in the vegetables, so be sure to use a non-soluble plastic.
  (If used for drinking water, you should ensure that the canvas and barrel do not contain toxins and use a good filter.)
• Depending on the canvas you use, UV rays can damage the canvas.

Step 1: Materials

Materials:

• 1 PVC pipe – large Ø (80 – 150 mm) – length: 2 m
• 4 PVC pipes – small Ø (25 – 30 mm) – length: 3 m
• 8 tube clips – Ø 25-30 mm
• 20 Nuts and bolts – M5 x 30
• 8 Eyebolts and nuts – M5
• 60 m clothesline
• Tension Cables – 5 mm wide
• Metal straps – Ø = large Ø + 2x small Ø
• 4 Keychains
• Mesh (for a pond) – 3×3 m
• Waterproof fabric, cloth (7×3 m or 2×4.5×3 m)
• 16 Cable Clamps
• Table top plate (preferably PVC / natural wood)
• 6 Shelf supports (L)
• 1 Industrial tank – 1 m³ /1000 L

Precipitation (average) 17.5L/m2 per week (local meteorological site)
Necessary surface area (20 L/m² x GS) / 17.5 L/m² = necessary collector surface

Note: The maximum surface area of a collector is 6 m² (restricted by standard pipe lengths with a maximum of 3 m).

If you want it to be larger, we suggest you build more than one. When you choose a smaller one, you should reduce the size and distance. But never the number of pieces necessary.

Step 2: Central tube (Ø 80 – 150 Mm, 2 M)

• Drill random holes in the bottom meter of the tube, this will help the flow of water into the barrel and acts as an extra filter.
• Now drill 4 holes in each quadrant of the large tube 1.2 m from the bottom and another 4 1.5 m from the bottom.
• Make sure the distance between the holes is the same everywhere.
• Secure the tube snaps (C) into the holes with bolts.

Note: Drill the hole with a drill bit size that is 0.5 mm smaller than the diameter of the bolts you are going to use (self-threading).
Use countersunk bolts to ensure the bolt is secured in the pvc snap. Otherwise, it will be difficult to fit the tube into the connections.

Step 3: Small tubes (Ø 25 – 30 Mm, 3 M)

• The 4 PVC pipes are the same.
• Make a hole through the pipe about 30 cm from the beginning of the tube and another 2 cm from the end.
• Now turn the tube 90° and drill another hole 50 cm from the start of the tube.
• Place the eye bolt into the 30cm and 2cm holes.
• Now fit the small tube into the large tube, with the eye bolt gioutside.
• Repeat this for the other 3 pipes.
• Connect the 4 pipes by placing tension straps through the 8 holes 50 cm from the start. This will prevent the pipes from rotating too much. Also place metal straps around the pipes for added strength/security.

Step 4: Canvas

• Cut out the canvas pattern (drawing) four times. For smaller models, you can size down. Make sure you have a hole in at least 1 top corner of each part.
• Sew two pieces together on both blue and red lines (for the tube sleeve). Repeat this step three times until you have all four patterns sewn together. You should now have the funnel on the inside and the tube sleeves on the outside.
• If you have scraps of fabric on the sides, you can cut them off.
• Place the fabric funnel on the frame. Punch a hole in the 4 fins at the bottom of the funnel. Tie these holes using the clothesline and fix it to a brick, or other heavy object, and place it in the center tube; This will guide the canvas towards the center tube and keep it there for water to flow into it.
• When the canvas is attached to the frame, you can screw the eyebolts back onto the end of the small pipes. Make sure they are facing the same direction as the ones at the bottom.

Note: Use a strong needle because the fabric is quite thick to sew.
A double stitch line/pattern is recommended!

Step 5: Wires

• Cut 4 threads to a length of 3.3 m and 4 to the length of 4 m.
• Use the clamps to make a loop, it should be about 3m.
• The 4 short cables are used for the square surface that catches the rain.
• The 4 long cables are used to anchor the entire structure to the ground.
• Take 4 key rings and place each on an eye bolt on top of the small PVC pipes.
• Attach the metal hole in the canvas to the ring at each corner.
• Connect the 4 corner rings together, using the 4 short wires (3 m) to become the square surface.
• Connect the remaining 4 cables (4 m) to the ring at each corner.
• Stretch the net and cut it to a size of 3x3 m.
• Connect the corners of the net to the rings at each corner.
• After this, you can attach the sides of the fabric and the net to the cables, using tension tapes.
• You can make some holes in the top of the canvas for tension straps.
• Now open the flexible collector until the fabric is under tension.
• Next, anchor the long cables (4 m) into the ground with pegs.

Note: If the wires between the 4 small PVC tubes are too loose, you can adjust the length until it is tight enough.

Step 6: Cover

• Take the reservoir cap and make a hole in the center approximately the diameter of the center pipe.
• Place 3 shelf supports (L) around the center hole (every 120°). This will keep the frame directly in the barrel.
• Use the same screws and nuts as in step 2.

Note: Mark and place the shelf supports on the deck with the center PVC pipe already in place. Because of this, the PVC pipe will fit exactly between the shelf supports.

Step 7: Top Table

• Now make a table approximately the size of the barrel (1×1.20 m).
• Drill a hole in the middle of the plate that is a little larger in diameter than the center tube so the shelf supports can pass through.

Step 8: Assembly

• Put the barrel in its place. Screw the lid on and place the table top into the barrel.
• Secure the table with tension straps to the barrel. You will need to drill some holes in the top of the table, near the frame around the barrel.
• Place the tube in the barrel and pull the wires at each corner.
• Once the barrel is in place, you can attach the cables to a picket and secure them to the ground.
