Pendant Lamp: Saturn Rings of LED Lights, this LED pendant lamp made of plywood, LED strips and a flexible LED channel. Since I designed this for my living room, the music sync had to be incognito. With this in mind, I used warm/white LED strips, instead of RGB strips. In solid white mode, the rings emit various shades of white for a sophisticated, modern look that hides the wild side when you switch the light to music display mode
The construction is quite simple. Each of the two rings is made from a stack of three plywood rings, where the center ring has a smaller radius to create a slot for the LEDs. The rings are easy to cut with a circle cutting template and router. While programming an Arduino to do music visualization based on a microphone input, you can easily purchase a standard music controller for individually controllable LEDs.
I've included most of the parts for the build below, and the video will walk you through the build process. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments section and I will be happy to answer you.
Step 1: Parts List
- Flexible LED channel.
- Walnut plywood.
Links to factory controller and LED lights (this makes mode switching, music sync LEDs easier to install), but please note that you will need a separate controller for each ring:
- LED music controller with remote control and power supply.
Types of LED strips:
- Individually controllable white/cold (white/amber) (WWA) LED strips.
- Warm white LED strips with individually controllable temperature variation.
- Individually controllable RGB LED strip.
LED parts I used for the build:
- Individually controllable SK6812 WWA LED strips
- Arduino Mega Clone
- Electret microphone
- RF receiver and remote control
Step 2: Cut the rings

[Note: The pictures show a jigsaw, but I used a router with a circular cutting template. I had a couple of mistakes as a result of not having a router long enough to go through two pieces of 1/2″ plywood. Make sure you get a 1.25″ long drill bit and you will avoid this.]
Each ring is actually a stack of three rings that are glued together. The top and bottom rings on each stack are identical, and are made from 1/2″ walnut veneer plywood. The center ring is made of standard 3/4″ plywood (not visible), and the diameter of the center ring is 1″ less (i.e. 0.5″ less radius) than the top and bottom rings, so the stack forms a channel for the LED profile.
Cutting the rings is easier with a circle cutting template. Stack the sheets of 1/2″ walnut plywood and screw them together so you can cut the top and bottom rings in one go. When cutting each stack of rings, you will want to work from the outside in, so cut in the following order:
- Cut the outside radius of the top and bottom rings from the walnut plywood. (I cut them to 42″ diameter.)
- Shorten the distance to the router of your circular cutting template by 0.5″ (so the diameter of the resulting ring is 1″ smaller), then cut the outer radius of the middle ring (I cut it to 41″ diameter).
- Shorten the circle cutting template by another 1.5″ (so the diameter is 40″), then cut the inner radius of all the rings.
Then repeat steps 1-3 for the smaller ring.
Step 3: Glue the rings

Stack the 3 rings and use wood glue to join them together. Take your time and try to make sure the inner radius is as aligned as possible on all three rings.
Step 4: Apply Edger

Use a 3/4″ (or 5/8″ if you can find it) walnut edge for the outside radius of the top and bottom rings on each stack. I actually applied the border to the outer radius before the adhesive stuck, but I think you can do it after sticking it just as easily.
Use a 2″ walnut trim to cover the inside radius. If the inner radii of the three rings of each stack are not perfectly flush, you will need to sand them before doing this. For this, a belt sander is useful. You can use any type of sander to get the job done.
Step 5: Apply the finish

I applied two coats of Danish oil to each ring
Step 6: Add LED Strips
Cut a hole through the middle channel and out of the top of each ring to make a path for wiring to the LED strips.
Use the adhesive backing on the LED strip to adhere to the center ring on each ring stack. Optionally, use some CA glue to ensure the LED strips do not come off.
Step 7: Install a flexible LED channel
I cut the back of the LED channel, so I could directly adhere the LED strip to the wooden ring and have more space between the LEDs and the diffuser in the channel. This results in better light diffusion and a more solid appearance of the light (rather than the spots typically produced by LED strips).
I then bent the LED channel to the rough shape of the ring, cut it to size with a miter saw, and used glue to adhere it to the channel formed by the stack of three rings.
I used electrical tape wrapped around the ends of the channel to make sure it stayed in place while the glue dried.
Step 8: Program the Arduino and install the electronics

I was learning as I went and went through a lot of electronic setups. Ultimately, if you want to simplify this build, use the available controller and remote I linked to above.
If you're interested in building the electronics yourself, here's a link to the code I used (warning, it's very crude): https://github.com/modustrialmaker/Rings-of-Saturn-LED-Light-Music-Visualizer
