Building a DIY log holder is not a difficult operation, and it's certainly a valid training ground for getting familiar with woodworking. The blazing flame of a wood-burning fireplace and the crackling of logs create a relaxing atmosphere on winter evenings: however, you need to have a minimum supply of fuel on hand to avoid going back and forth between the woodshed and the hearth, especially if it's outside the home.
Why Build a DIY Log Holder

To avoid leaving wood in sight and spreading debris around the fireplace, our reader Gabriele Rosi built a chest with dimensions that were the right compromise between capacity and footprint, using glued laminated spruce boards that he glued and screwed together so that it would be solid and reliable even when fully loaded. Once construction was finished, the square shape suggested that he could also use the chest as a seat, and since he hadn't yet decided on the finish, he thought of padding it externally and covering it with fabric; a sturdy jute cloth proved providential.

How to Build a Log Holder
1 – Storage When Not in Use
When not in use, the DIY log holder can be stored, for example, under the stairs. Consider pairing it with storage benches for extra organization.
2 – Lid Interior with Velcro Strips
On the inner face of the lid, attach strips of Velcro to store the necessary items for stoking the fire and cleaning the fireplace. You might also find home improvement essentials helpful for this project.
3 – Raised Bottom with Hidden Casters
The bottom of the chest is raised relative to the perimeter panels; in this way, hidden casters can be applied to move it easily. For similar mobility solutions, check out kitchen islands and carts.
4 – Foam Padding Application
On all perimeter faces of the chest, glue foam rubber squares slightly smaller in size, leaving about 10 mm around each face. This upholstery technique is also used for sofas and other padded furniture.
5 – Jute Covering
The jute squares for the external covering must instead be larger, so as to also cover the thickness of the foam rubber and be glued and stapled onto the wooden edge, keeping them taut and without forming creases. For fabric inspiration, browse curtains and other textiles.
6 – Corner Finishing with Leather Strips
The junctions between perpendicular surfaces are covered with dark leather strips with yellow thread stitching; at the corners formed by the meeting of three surfaces, add decorative accents. Complete the look with wall decor or rugs to tie the room together.
