Every day in the kitchen, we use various types of films to protect food, parchment paper, absorbent sheets: all materials in rolls that are stored in cabinets or drawers, taking up valuable space for other things. Browsing online, you can find wall-mounted roll holders of all kinds, but at most up to 3 slots: those with 4 slots are rare, and from an aesthetic point of view, you have to take what's available or think about building a DIY roll holder.

Especially since conceptually the object is quite simple, our reader Leonardo Lamberti chose the second option and designed a DIY roll holder capable of holding 4 rolls and offering a shelf at the top for storing spice jars and the like. The roll with the largest diameter and, all things considered, the most frequent use, is the paper towel roll, so it was placed at the bottom and influenced the shaping of the sides, similar to a "b".

Rummaging through leftover material from other projects, a piece of 12 mm Chilean pine plywood emerged from which the two main pieces could be obtained. Other pieces are also recovered from scraps, but Leonardo calculated that, if you have to buy all the material, the cost is 22 euros.
How to Build a DIY Wall-Mounted Roll Holder
The piece of plywood found in the workshop has an irregular shape; however, by finding the best combination, you can get both sides, previously drawn on a sheet of paper and cut out.
Using a jigsaw, cut out the pieces: the height is 500 mm, while the width goes from 100 mm to 145 mm at the bottom.
To smooth and even out the edges, overlap the two pieces and hold them together with some small nails, then pass the sander over them.
Prepare the Supports for the Rolls
For the roll supports, you can use wooden dowels or metal rods. Measure the length based on the width of your rolls plus some extra for the sides. Drill holes in the side pieces at the desired heights, making sure they are level. Insert the dowels or rods and secure them with wood glue or by screwing small brackets underneath.
To finish, sand everything smooth and apply a coat of paint or varnish that matches your kitchen decor. Once dry, mount the holder on the wall using sturdy screws and anchors appropriate for your wall type.
Frequently Asked Questions
What tools do I need for this project?
You'll need a jigsaw, drill, sander, measuring tape, pencil, wood glue, clamps, and basic hand tools like a hammer and screwdriver. For a smooth finish, also have sandpaper and paint or varnish on hand.
Can I use different wood types?
Yes, you can use any sturdy wood like pine, plywood, or hardwood. Just ensure it's at least 12 mm thick to hold the weight of the rolls.
How do I mount it securely?
Use wall anchors suitable for your wall material (drywall, plaster, etc.) and screws long enough to go through the holder and into the wall. A level is essential to ensure it hangs straight.
What size rolls will fit?
The design accommodates standard kitchen rolls, including paper towels (larger diameter) and cling film or parchment paper (smaller diameter). You can adjust the hole spacing and dowel length for custom sizes.
Can I add more shelves?
Absolutely! You can extend the design by adding an extra shelf above or below, or even a small drawer for scissors or clips. Just ensure the wall mount can support the added weight.
