2 Easy Ways to Build a Brick Stove, so you want to make a stove, but you don't have much time or money to build something with the latest technology. I think every beginning blacksmith has been there. It is difficult to imagine how to make a structure that can withstand such high amounts of heat and still function without having to spend a large amount of money and/or hours to obtain it. Well, this is a step by step guide on how to build a small stove.

First Brick Stove

I tried a smaller brick one but needed a larger kitchen area. Works best for me

Step 1: Base slab

My stove was placed in a garden space. I insert the slab by cutting a patch of grass and making sure it is level.

Step 2: 1st Row of bricks

I used 2 half bricks but you could use 2 whole ones on the back. Ensure a tight fit around the inside corners. I made the grill with corner plaster molding that I cut into 3 pieces and hammered for the tray.

Step 3: 2nd Row

I used full bricks for the second thickness.

Step 4: 3rd Row

Filled bricks ensuring a perfect fit around the internal chimney. Alternating interlocking brick pattern.

Step 5: Stove Top Area

I used an old baking tray. For additional height compensation I used ceramic spacers.

Step 6: Fire!

Add the wood onto the air grill. Light with paper or fire starters and burn until smokeless.

Step 7: Cook!

Step 1: Materials and tools

Materials:

  • Red bricks, a total of 22 bricks. Obviously you'll need more if you want to make it higher.
  • 50 lb sand should be more than enough.
  • A length of pipe. A 1/2″ diameter by 5′ long conduit pipe (which is what I use).
  • Metal grate of some kind. A grill grate would work. I've used everything from heavy gauge chicken wire to a wire refrigerator shelf.
  • A pipe elbow that fits your pipe. 1/2″ in my case.
  • A tube cap. once agains, mine is 1/2″ black iron pipe and it works well.
  • An air source for a bellows. I'm currently using an old air mattress, but I've also used a hair dryer, a box bellows, and a crank bellows.
  • Adhesive tape.

Tools:

  • A drill and bits
  • A hacksaw or other metal saw
  • A palette

Step 2: Choose your location

Choose a location that is a good distance from anything flammable. I do not recommend a garage or small workshop due to flying sparks and high temperatures being a factor.

Mine is set up next to the backyard garden. Even out there I've managed to set dry grass on fire several times, resulting in a small-scale prairie fire in my own backyard, so choose an open patch with nothing that could seriously ignite.

Also make sure it is level because this will save you the trouble of having to level it yourself.

Step 3: Lay Your Bricks

2 Simple Ways to Build a Brick Stove

Start designing your brick pattern with the first layer. I just use a simple square shape. Be sure to leave a space between the two front bricks for the pipe to sit.

For my masonry, I use a simple overlapping pattern with two bricks on the front and back, one brick between them on the sides, then the opposite one on the second layer and so on.

This helps lock the bricks in the corners, making a stronger structure. There are probably other better ways to do it, but I'm not a bricklayer and this works pretty well.

Whatever pattern you choose to use, make sure your bricks overlap or they won't stay together and you'll end up with a pile of bricks again. Anyone who has ever played with building Lego houses has figured it out.

Build as many layers as you want. As I said before, mine is quite humble at three levels high, but it does the job well.

Step 4: Build Your Air System

Definitely the most complicated part of this build. Take your length of pipe and cut a piece that is about the same height as your brick structure. This will serve as the air delivery to the oven.

Take the longest piece of your pipe and twist it at the elbow. The pipe may not be threaded exactly, but rather twisted as if it were threaded so that the connection bites and fits better. Take your end cap and drill a series of holes in it, then attach it to the end of the shorter pipe.

Again, the end cap probably won't crimp exactly, but it will work perfectly. Slide the long pipe, elbow first, through the gap we left at the bottom front of the brick structure and then twist the shorter section of pipe into the open end of the elbow.

Step 6: Sand

Take your sand and push it around your pipe inside the brick structure. Make sure the pipe is upright and at least close to the center of the brick structure.

For a tighter fit, feel free to pack sand in the gaps between the bricks as well, but it's really not necessary.

Step 5: Place your grill

Place your grill on top of the brick structure and anchor it with bricks or bricks. This will keep your grill in place and create a sort of railing to keep your projects and fuel inside the forge.

Step 6: Connect the bellows

Place the end of the blower on the end of the pipe and tape them together. This is obviously quite primitive and also requires a small sacrifice of duct tape every time you need to remove the bellows for some reason.

You could probably equip a different system with pipe fittings, but this is what I do and it has worked well so far.

Step 7: Fire!

Once you have everything connected, all you have to do is light your fire. Add charcoal, charcoal, or wood to your fire as it heats up and builds. Turn on your bellows when you have decent heat and start cooking! Greetings to all!
