Deep down, I wanted to build PVC pipe fences that go from one post to another, but I was always afraid to do it.
I originally built the wooden fence, but it only lasted 3 years and then it started to rot due to the rain. So I decided to rebuild it using PVC pipe.
PVC pipe should last much longer and the price is not much different from wood fence.
This item below are for a single panel.
So, if you decide to build this PVC fence and need more than one panel, you will need to do the math for additional material.
Supplies:
- 4 3″ PVC pipes 8′ long
- 5 3/4″ PVC pipes 10′ long
- 15 3/4″ PVC Caps
- 1/2″ screws
- Clamps
Tools to build PVC pipe fences:
- Drill
- Miter saw
- Tape measure
- 1 1/16″ Hole Saw Bit
- PVC cutter
- Bench drill
#1: Measuring and cutting rails

- Depending on your needs, the rail length may be different than what I am providing, but in my case, I needed the penal guide to be 77 1/2″.
- So, the first step was to cut the 3″ round PVC pipe to 77 1/2″ (x2). It is not necessary to have a special blade to cut PVC pipe.
- I simply used my miter saw to cut the pipe using a regular blade that cuts wood.
Cut List:

#2: Drilling Holes for Pickets

- Both the top and bottom rails now need holes for the 3/4″ PVC pipe pickets.
- At the time of building this PVC fence, I only had a manual drilling press available.
- I built a jig and placed the manual drill press on top to drill the holes at 90 degrees.
- An electric drill would probably work better than the one I had available.
- Starting from one end, pull out a 3 5/8″ measurement and make a mark.
- This will be the center of the first hole, after that the holes are every 5″ from center to center.
- The outside diameter of the 3/4″ PVC picket pipe is 1 1/16″.
- Therefore, you will need a 1 1/16″ drill bit to drill these holes.
- I secured the 3″ pipe to the table with the C clamp so the pipe does not move or rotate.
- Then slide the template through each mark and fill the holes.
#3: Cut Pickets

- Once you have completed the top and bottom rails and all the drilled holes, cut 15 pickets.
- Take a 3/4″ PVC pipe and cut it to 32″ long with a PVC cutter. There will be 15 of these pickets.
#4: Bottom Rail Plug Screws

- Place a mark 4″ from the bottom of the PVC picket and screw a 7x1/2 hex washer head screw into that mark.
- This will prevent the bottom rail from sliding past the screw.
- Do this on all 15 pegs.
#5: Insert the bottom rail

- Slide the pickets through the 3″ down tube rail holes. The 1/2″ screw will prevent the rail from falling to the floor.
#6: Screws for the top rail part

- Similar to step 5, but now place a mark 6″ from the top of cMake a notch and thread the 1/2″ screw into that mark.
- The top screws should be oriented in the same direction as the bottom screws.
#7: Top Rail and End Caps

- For the last step, slide the pickets through the top rail. The screws will hold the slide rail down.
- Place the PVC caps on top. Spray paint the entire PVC fence panel.
