DIY Sliding Gate: Build Your Own from Reused Railings 2026

Never throw away an old balcony railing or T-shaped fence posts. The replacement of all the railings in a building, which were destined for the scrap heap, inspired our reader Pier Giorgio Carabba to recover them and build a DIY sliding gate for his country house. The project includes two shorter fixed sections and one longer sliding section on a track, moved by hand (at least for now!). The railings were made with vertical slats bent at sharp angles; to use them for their full length and get a slightly higher barrier, it was necessary to unsolder them all, straighten them, and reassemble the fence using the same pieces. The long span of the DIY sliding gate requires three vertical square-tube posts—two at the ends and one in the center—with wheels at the base for sliding.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building the Gate

1. Disassemble and Prepare the Railings

Carefully unsolder all the elements of the old railings. Straighten the metal pieces and remove any rust using a wire brush or grinder. Re-weld them into straight fence sections of the required length. Grind down the welds to smooth out excess material.

2. Build the Support Structure

Cut three square steel tubes to the desired height for the posts. Attach the sliding wheels to the base of each post using a steel plate and a piece of square tube inserted inside the post. The wheels should be the type used for sliding gates, which run on a raised track.

3. Create the Concrete Track Base

Dig a trench for the track and pour a concrete foundation. While the concrete is still wet, embed a T-shaped profile (like a fence T-post) into it, ensuring the flat part is level and exposed. Smooth the concrete carefully to create a solid, monolithic surface that resists weathering and vehicle traffic.

4. Assemble and Install the Gate

Once the concrete has cured, position the three posts with wheels onto the T-track. Attach the long sliding section to the wheels. Install the two shorter fixed sections on either side, securing them to the ground or adjacent structures. Test the sliding mechanism to ensure smooth movement.

5. Finishing Touches
