HDMI 2.2 is coming and promises high resolutions and more FPS! 2026

From 2027 we will start to see various products on the market that will come with the support of the brand new HDMI 2.2. The HDMI Forum presented the new generation during CES 2026 and as it now states, companies will start creating products from this year, and we will see them on the market from 2027.

Chairman Rob Tobias announced that companies are expected to build products with HDMI 2.2 support within the year and they will start arriving in stores by 2027. To remind you that HDMI 2.2 promises a new generation of technologies through a new protocol, as it will be able to support 12K resolution at 120FPS, 8K resolution at 240FPS, 4K resolution at 240Hz etc.

The new HDMI 2.2 offers much greater bandwidth than HDMI 2.1 as from 48Gbps it will now reach 96Gbps, surpassing even DisplayPort 2.1. This is achieved thanks to a new data mode called Fixed Rate Link (FRL).

As Wccftech says, the extra bandwidth will allow higher resolutions and refresh rates to be supported without image compression, so users will see "crystal clear" images at high FPS.

Of course, in addition to the products coming in 2027, consumers will also need to get the special cables that come with Ultra96 certification that support 96 Gbps bandwidth.

The HDMI Forum recently announced that with the arrival of HDMI 2.2, people will now be able to choose the right cable with ease, as it will be different in name from the Standard, High Speed, Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed cables we know, since as we told you above, it will be called HDMI Ultra96.

HDMI 2.2 also promises very low latency through the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) and has seen quite a bit of improvement since HDMI 2.1, which was released in 2017. Although HDMI 2.1 came almost a decade ago, it took many years for companies to adopt it in their devices. For example, the first PlayStation with HDMI 2.1 support is the PS5, which we saw in 2020, however, from next year we will start to see it on various new devices. It remains to be seen which company will take the lead. Graphics cards with the new port will most likely appear, but so will gaming monitors and televisions.
