How to Build a Pot Heater 2026

Today we will teach you how to build a pot heater easily, which you can do in the comfort of your home.

When you think of versatile project materials, flower pots don't really come to mind, do they? To most of us, they appear purely decorative.

Winters can take a toll on your finances with the amount of money you spend on heating.

We are all trying to cut costs and save money. If there is something that can help us achieve this, we are all in agreement.

This cost-effective DIY pot heater can help heat a small to medium-sized room.

In addition to its heating function, it also works as a great decoration! You will have fun doing this. If you're feeling generous, make several and give them as gifts.

#1: Supplies and Tools

Materials to build a pot heater:

• 6″ Terracotta Pot
• 5″ Terracotta Pot
• 11 link chain
• 14 1/2″ nuts
• 11 1/2″ washer
• 1/2″ threaded rod
• Tea lights

Tools:

• Tape measure
• Cutting saw
• Lime

Note: If you have large washers with a small 1/4″ hole, you can use 5 washers total instead of 10. Also, the two large 1/2″ nuts are simply spacers. If you want, you can use a small 1-1/2″ section of small tubing, or anything you can think of.

#2: Drilling Base Holes

• You will need your drill, ceramic plate
• Bit size: 5/16″
• There should be a small circle in the middle of the base which is the center. Mark this with your marker. Mark your three holes for the legs. You can measure this or just look at it like I did. It doesn't need to be perfect!
• Add some water to the place where you will drill. Add more if necessary throughout the drilling process.
• Using your new or newly sharpened drill bit, slowly drill all four holes. Remember not to press too hard because the opposite side of the ceramic plate will chip and break underneath. Slow drilling, with minimal pressure. This takes some time, so be patient.
• When you're done, your plate should look like the picture.

#3: Base Bolt Assembly

• You will need one 1/4″x 5″ bolt, two 1/4″ nuts, two small washers, and two large washers. Note: If you have large washers with 1/4″ holes, use them.
• I couldn't find any in my shop and only used two washers to achieve my goal.
• From the bottom of the ceramic plate, place the bolt through the center hole with its washers. If you are using two washers like me, make sure the large washer is against the ceramic and then the small one is on top of the large washer.
• This is how it should look. It is vital to keep the washers and bolt aligned straight.
• Now the same on the top side of the ceramic plate. Large washer, small washer, 1/4″ nut.
• It should look like this when you're done. Remember to keep everything nice and straight when tightening.

#4: Assemble the legs

• You will need your 3 x 5/16″ bolts and nuts
• Undo the three screws through the three holes.
• Turn it over and screw the nuts onto the three bolts. Hand tighten.

#5: Assemble Bolts and Spacers

• You will need the second 5″ x 1/4″ bolt, 3 small washers, 3 large washers, 2 LARGE nuts. Recommended: If you have large washers with 1/4″ holes, use them. I didn't have to place them around the workshop.
• Place one large washer, one small washer, and the bolt through the top of the larger pot as shown in part 1 of the diagram.
• On the inside of the pot you are going to put a large washer, then a small washer, then a nut. Tighten with a screwdriver and pliersfine tip. Do not overtighten. Be careful not to break the pot!
• Put your spacers on the bolt. Remember: you can use anything here. Whether it's a small metal pipe, an oversized coupling, or even a ton of washers, it all works. I used two BIG nuts as my spacers.

Note: You only want your spacer to measure about 1″. A spacer that is too large will cause your inner pot to protrude below your large pot.

• Now some washers. Small than big. Or 1 washer if you have a large one with a 1/4″ hole.

#6: Insert the second ceramic vessel

• Place the second pot inside the larger pot.
• As always, big washer, small washer, nut. Tighten with needle nose pliers. Do not overtighten.
• Now you should have something like this.
• Now screw your coupler halfway.

#7: Connecting the base to the top

• Screw the base bolt into the coupler. You want to try to get the entire top together and make sure the coupler tightens the base bolt. If you're not careful, the top bolt will start to thread further down the coupler, instead of the coupler fitting onto the base bolt, which we don't want.

Remember that you can build a pot heater with different measurements or depending on the size of the pot.
