How to Make Cardboard Birds 2026

Today we will teach you how to make cardboard birds based on cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, among other boxes. You don't even need scissors.

Just a glue gun, and crafty fingers. But for all practical hands: Make your own!

Steps to make cardboard birds:

Step 1: The Base

Cut three strips of cardboard for the chest part. Look for pieces that are the correct color for the bird you intend to make. Tearing gives a more natural effect than cutting.

The jagged white edges make a feather-like impression and distort the printing on the original box.

On top of that, it allows you to get away with poorly fitted parts that would look awkward on well-cut parts.

Glue the three strips together in a fan shape. Make sure the center strip is at the top.

Fold the three strips and glue the other end in the same way, creating a banana shape.

Step 2: Preparations for the legs

Take a piece of wire. The length depends on the size of your bird. Better long than short. (see step 10). Fold it into a narrow "U" shape. Glue it through the body strips.

Place it with a small piece of cardboard where the head will be, and secure it with a longer strip across the three body strips where the legs will come off the body.

I used red parts to clarify this article.

The color will not be displayed later.

Step 3: Sides

To give the body a more three-dimensional shape, add two strips of cardboard to the body, approx.

Half the length of the first three strips. Notice how the end is slightly bent diagonally, creating a very wide triangle that fits the sides of the 'banana'.

Step 4: Back

Attach a new long strip to the end where the head will be.

Fold it and glue it to the end of the tail. It should make a nice S shape.

Step 5: Wings

Tear off two "D" shapes for the shoulders.

Give a small tear in the middle of the straight side. Pull one half a little over the other so that the "D" shape is three-dimensional.

Add three or four long strips of cardboard for the feathers and a few shorter ones for the rest of the wing.

Step 6: Attach the wings to the body

The wings are attached to the sides of the body.

It may be necessary to place an additional strip of cardboard like a ring under the shoulders.

It makes the body more rigid and makes it easier to attach the wings.

Step 7: Queue

Add cardboard strips in the appropriate colors for the glue.

Look at the shape of the tail in a photo of your bird. Sometimes they are pointed, sometimes they are fan-shaped.

Add strips to the top and bottom.

Step 8: Head

Cut three almond-shaped pieces of cardboard box. One for the top of the head, the other two for the sides.

Fold the top of the head and place it on the strip de posterior bone.

Fold the same way you did the top and glue them to the wings and the tapered side of the back or body.

I later covered the opening under the head, between the wings and the body, with a black collar. (see next step)

It doesn't matter if there is a small opening left. The bird will look more "artistic" when you can see that the body is not massive.

Step 9: Peak

Sometimes I use triangles folded in the middle, but for this bird a quarter circle, rolled into a cone was the right way.

Just stick it on the body with some hot glue from the glue gun.

In the last photo you can see how I added black cardboard to cover the opening under the head.

Step 10: Legs

Bend your legs in the correct way. A little back, then forward and for the sharp legs back and forth.

Leave the paws with one finger forward and backward. Take two additional pieces of wire and bend them into a 'Y' shape.

Tie this piece to the back of the toe with a thin piece of wire. (You might want to close your trash bags.)

I paint the legs with acrylic paint (about two coats). Don't be shy with color.

Combine them with some part of the body instead of making them "realistic" gray.

Step 11: Result

Each bird has its own character. Try to find the right shape, color and size for different birds.

And make sure you don't throw away food boxes, what's better than reinventing nature by reusing waste materials?
