Building a Kids Train Bed, the bed is made of 1/2 inch MDF, the rail and edge are made of pine. All edges of the bed are routed (except the outer edge of the round part). I painted in latex paint and covered with acrylic satin gloss. The bed breaks down into several pieces... since all together they would weigh about 350 pounds and be immovable.
Main tools needed:
- Air compressor
- Nail gun
- Stapler
- Jigsaw
- Miter saw
- Table saw
- Router
- Sander
Materials (approx):
- 3-4×8 1/2″ MDF
- 4 1×4 pine boards
- 4 – 1.3 Blackboards
- 6 Screw Bolts
- Nuts
- Bolts nuts
- Glue
- Painting
Step 1: Make the mattress base

Go buy a mattress and measure the dimensions. Next, make the top of the bed where the mattress will rest. This is quite easy to do. I used some L brackets to support the inside corners of the bed. I used a nail gun and glue to hold it together.
Step 2: Make the round part

This is a difficult part… It is not easy at all. If you don't measure this perfectly, you will do it again. So measure 6 times, cut once on this part. See photo for more details.
The diameter of the round part should be as wide as the top bed you made in step 1. Make sure to cut the circles in the middle of the MDF (you will need the "scrap" piece to build the train bumper)
I screwed together two pieces of MDF and then cut a circle to get exactly two circles of the same size.
Next, you will need to route the inside edge of the circles to countersink the masonry plate that you will use to wrap the round part. See the picture of how I put it together.
Step 3: Build the base

The base is smaller than the bed part you made in Step 1. It is about 10 inches narrower (so the top will hang over the sides for depth.
It's not that long either, but the front should be flush with the top of the bed
Step 3: Build Bumpers and Dry Assembly

Using the scrap wood from Step 2, build the bumper. Pretty simple. Attach the bed with bolts. See image for bolt placement.
Step 5: Build cabin walls

To get the proportion and placement of the windows, I first used a giant piece of cardboard to make a sample wall.
Once I had it the way I wanted, I drew the dimensions on the MDF and cut it out. I placed 3 inch wobble pine strips to support them (the ones glued and nailed to the wall).
I then drilled holes to attach wall to bed in Step 1. I counterbalanced the holes and used a lag bolt to attach to the bed.
Step 6: Build the Roof

I used the same technique to build this as I did with the round part in step 2. I wrapped the top with masonry board (I didn't palisade it though).
Step 7: Side Rails

See notation in the image. Pretty easy step.
Step 8: Back Panel

Add it to the back of the bed and attach it to the cabin walls only.
Step 9: Wheels and front end

Cut out the jigsaw wheels and the round piece for the front of the train. Don't join them. firstyou will paint and then plug it in (it's much easier to do it this way).
Step 10: Paint Box and Piston

Disassemble the bed and paint. You're also going to need a piston box. I made this with MDF, just like I did with the round part in step 2.
However, the masonry plate will not fit such a small object... So instead of spacing wooden supports every few centimeters like I did in the round part, I placed wooden spacers side by side.
You will also need the bars that are attached to the wheels. Measure them and connect them with nails and glue. I then added a silver screw for decorative purposes.
A graffiti you will also need to make the smoke stack. I made this on a lathe. I converted a 6x6 inch x 8 inch piece of wood to make this one.
Step 11: Final product

See attached photos. My son loves it. You'll see that my other son has a truck that I made him 2 years ago.
