Restoring an Old Knife (Step by Step) 2026

See how you can do a restoration of an old knife easily and quickly, using a rotary sander, to bring that knife you love so much back to life.

Why?

Because it's a shame that someone threw away such a good knife, because we should all be more careful when deciding what is trash and what could be repaired.

What is needed?

• A rusty knife 😉
• Sandpapers (80 to 400)
• Drill or rotary sander
• Grinder

Steps to follow to restore an old knife:

Step 1: Get Rid of Rust

First you need to get rid of the rust. This can be done as in the photo with a grinder or with vinegar. Just put the knife in vinegar for one night and the rust should be gone, but then... You still need to grind/sand the knife to remove the rust filled holes 🙁

So I decided to use only grinder.

Step 2: Polishing

After the first grinding, you will get a rust-free but not very smooth surface. Now you need to sand the knife.

I use sandpaper from 80 to 400 for this drill.

The overheated knife could become soft and will never be as sharp again. So cool often during work.

Step 3: The Handle

Cleaning the handle is easy. You can do it by hand - it will take a long time, but it's not a bad idea. This way it gives greater precision.

However I used a rotary sander, it is the fastest way 🙂

The end of the handle was sanded manually.

Remember to sand with at least 80 to 320 grit sandpaper.

Step 4: Finishing

Now it's the easiest job: put the stain on the handle and sharpen the knife.

You can use any stain, but keep in mind that it should not be poisonous to people since the knife will be used in the kitchen.

Step 5: The end
