I will explain here how to make the template with common and cheap objects.

Step 1: The sketch

After measuring some bottles, I planned to leave about 12 cm between supports, with the possibility of increasing this distance to 17 cm.

This is enough to cut small standard beer bottles as well as 1 liter ones.

My design is very simple, my intention was to build an articulated arm that could also move along the axial direction, and strong enough to maintain position while pushing the cutting blade into the glass.

So I decided to use what I already had at home, and the device gradually took shape.

Step 2: The components

The wooden base is a salami cutting board that is approximately 14 x 25 cm, so it is perfect for my project.

The other main parts are, in addition to the essential cutting blade, four furniture wheels, an electrical conduit and some wooden beams.

The diameter of the wheels should not be more than 4 cm, and it should be cool to find the wheels with a rubber surface.

Wood is:

• A piece of approximately 25 x 4 x 2 cm (length, height, width)
• One piece 11 x 4 x 2 cm
• Approximately 25 cm total length of a 1 x 2 cm section beam

The duct is the same width and length as the largest beam (25 cm long and 2 cm wide in my case) and has to be the type with a removable cover.
Then you just need a little glue, different types of screws, a bolt and four rubber feet.

Step 3: First holes

All the holes in this device are made by hand, but you can better use a drill press to get perfect perpendicularity.

I added a new hole to the bottom of the wire conduit, so a total of three holes cover the entire length, but you can also add two more holes as they will hang the "rail" better on the wood board.

Then I also made four small holes in the top cover, which is 8 cm long. These holes are not centered on the shorter side, to avoid interference between the horizontal and vertical screws.

Step 4: Let's make the union...

A pair of long screws acts as a joint for the wooden arm. So cut a couple of 3x2x1 cm pieces of wood and, about 7 mm from the edge, drill a hole in the direction of the longest axis.

Dispose of the pieces on a flat surface and mark the position of the duct cover holes. Then drill the four holes for the screws.

Step 5: …And the arm

We are going to refine the head of the arm so that you can have the cutter at hand. I tried using the cutter as is, avoiding piercing it. A large screw keeps it stable in a slot etched into the wood.

As I made some improvements to improve the function of the tool, I also replaced the screw with a bolt, and angled the cutter more, as you cansee in the first image of the next step.

Step 6: Let's assemble the cutting mechanism

My first attempt was to screw the two small blocks of wood directly into the duct cover.

This doesn't work, because the two-part pivot (the two long horizontal screws) has more play than a single pivot, the plastic cover is not rigid enough, and the arm was not very stable.

So I added an additional wooden beam to reinforce the device.

After screwing the horizontal pieces together, insert the arm and insert the long screws into the holes to mark the position where to drill the hole in the arm.

Step 7: Glue the beams

Place the "rail" on the largest wooden beam and mark the hole positions. Drill the holes but wait to glue the pieces to screw the rail.

Place two wheels on the board to have the exact position where to stick the large beam. I used two element glue to be faster, but you can also use regular wood glue.

Step 8: The rollers

Meanwhile, if the longer beam is fixed, you can drill holes for the rollers. I used very short screws so that they would not protrude from the bottom surface of the board.

The last two rows of holes are for changing two wheels so that a larger bottle can be held.

Step 9: Rail and rubber feet

Now assemble the four wheels, screw the rail into place, add four rubber feet, clean the surfaces... lThe main piece is almost ready.

Step 10: A little finishing

Since the carriage cover moves loosely along the rail, I decided to glue two nylon bands inside the longer edges. I cut the stripes out of a nylon cake pan. You can also smooth them with sandpaper.

Use cyanoacrylate glue, and to ensure that the stripes stay pressed while drying, apply the cover to the rail as soon as you apply the glue.

This solution works very well, and you can set the resistance of the movement by simply moving the "carriage" from side to side quickly, as the heat will consume the plastic a bit, mitigating the opposing force.

Step 11: The bottle stop

Glue the last wooden beam to act as a stop for the bottle. Check that it is tall enough to reach larger bottles as well.

This beam will also act as reinforcement for the rail, so add a little glue between the two boards.

Step 12: Try it!

It's time to test the device.

Unfortunately, there were a couple of errors in my design:

• As I explained before, the arm joint was not very robust
  The cutter blade was not reaching the glass of the largest bottle, because the steel frame touched at the beginning
• The blade path was a little misaligned with the circumference, and it came off of it

Step 13: Solving the problems

The solution to the problems was not difficult:

• I added the 8cm wooden beam between the duct cover and the wooden blocks, which makes the joint stronger
• I redesigned the arm with a slanted slot
• I touched up the surface of the slot with more attention to alignment, and added a more reliable bolt as a connection for the blade.

Step 14: What's missing?

Glasses? Yes, you are right... Since I am not very skilled in this technique, despite the perfect rhythm, I have broken all the bottles I have at home!

Step 15: I did it!

I finally did it! I cut around the entire circumference I turned the bottle over the small burner, after half a minute I stopped for ten seconds, then I dropped a few drops of cold water on the cut, and heard the crackle, I put the bottle over the flame again and it split!

Anyway, there is enough space between the two sets of wheels to hold a regular tea light, so you can heat the bottle by spinning on the same gear. I'll try that solution next time.

Using medium and fine grit sandpaper, I refined the edge by sanding it on a flat surface and removing any sharp edges. After that it seems incredible!

Step 16: Last improvement

To get a perfect cut, I had to replace the wooden arm with a stronger metal reinforcement and, with the use of a drill press, built a new carriage with a perfectly aligned joint.

I had to smooth the wooden edges under the arm to make it move. Also, this carriage is taller than the first one, so I can cut larger bottles with less blade flex and push it from the top instead of the side.

Step 17: The end?

This new solution works very well, since the joint is made by a single steel bar that runs through the entire length, and you can lock the blade in the arm without worrying about warping the wood.

When you push the blade against the glass, it stays exactly on the circumference, and at the end of the rotation it will reach the starting point of the trace, this is essential for a perfect division.

Since I have a good spring that fits well on the side of the arm, I plan to add it so that the arm will rise when you release the pressure, that will be great...
