Privacy Panel Made of PVC Pipes that Mimic Bamboo, we love the Tiki/Adventurous style of decor, but we needed a visual screen since our patio looks directly into our neighbors' kitchen (and vice versa).

We looked at tall plants, screens and even real bamboo wood (very expensive!). We agreed to install a bamboo screen wall, but we didn't want to deal with the eventual wear and tear of the wood.

A quick search for faux bamboo produced several ideas in the past that inspired us. Of course, we always try to “scale up” everything we do, but more on that later.

Step 1: Materials and tools

• 30 1-1/2″ PVC pipes
• 30 2″ PVC Pipes
• Five 8' white PVC pipes.
• 1/8″ threaded rod with couplings, nuts and washers
• Rope
• Golden oak wood finish
• Minwax Polycoat Clear Coat
• Heat gun
• Miter and box saw to cut PVC to desired lengths
• 1/8″ drill and bit
• Work surfaces and clamps
• Paint trays, finishing cloths, gloves

Step 2: Bamboo node

Making a PVC pipe look like bamboo or wood is easy, and there are several methods of doing it (some simpler than others). However, for this large-scale project, we needed assembly line ingenuity.

Bamboo nodes have a hard line where the leaves originate. To mark the hard lines, we place a screw on the side of our miter box so that the sharp tip is on the inside.

Then, while holding the pipe firmly against the screw, we rotated each pipe inside the miter box to mark a deep hole along the entire circumference of the pipe.

It is best to turn the pipe towards you so that it can match the initial score line, as it reappears at the top of the pipe.

Doing several of these along each length of pipe is the first step, and doing this on more than sixty pipes can give you quite the forearm workout.

Step 3: Heat Gun Setup

After the scoring (the markings for the node) was done, replicating the nodes to make them look similar was the hardest part to figure out.

Our needs:

• Similar appearance for each node
• Secure the heat gun for safe, hands-free operation
• Possibility of easily rotating the pipe
• Ability to easily move the heat gun to different areas of the pipe with minimal effort
• Ability to quickly remove PVC pipe to 'form' the node (more on this later)
• A consistent heat gun nozzle distance is the key to even heat distribution in PVC pipe.

Using a piece of wood with a V-notch cut into it kept the pipe centered and a constant distance from the heat gun nozzle.

We attached this to an upside-down wire basket of a chest freezer, making sure the wood went back just a bit beyond where the heat gun would be mounted. An old milk crate or other sturdy container could have worked just as well.

We secured the heat gun to the wire basket by using several Velcro ties.

These allowed the heat gun to be moved up and down to adjust the distance as needed for pipes of different diameters.

The complete assembly was able to slide forward or backward along the worktable, depending on the location of the node in the pipe.

We attached a large peg to a stepladder to support the other end of the tubería.

Sliding the pipe over this peg to facilitate rotating the pipe and holding the pipe against the step where the peg attaches helped prevent the pipe from deflecting while rotating.

Step 4: Form the nodes

To create the node, we heat the marked area on the pipe enough to make the pipe smooth.

The constant and stable rotation of the pipe on the heat gun was essential. About one rotation per 6 seconds is a good speed and does not cause too much color darkening; just don't stop or you'll burn the material and you won't want to inhale those fumes.

Lightly toasted marshmallow color is a good target, and the pipe will also start to warp.

When the pipe begins to bend in the heated area, it is ready. (You can use a small amount of bending pressure while twisting the pipe to help identify if it is ready.)

Remove the pipe from the template, place the pipe vertically and use both hands to slowly but firmly push down until the heated area "pops out."

You may need to use your feet or knees to help keep the bottom end of the pipe stable while using both hands on the heated area to push with enough force.

Hold pressure to hold the bump for about 5 seconds, and apply a wet cloth to the hot area or use a spray bottle to speed up the cooling process.

Place the pipe aside for additional cooling while you work on a node of the next pipe.

Be sure to lay each pipe flat on the ground or lean it against some other pipes to ensure it doesn't bend further during cooling.

Step 5: Homework and Finishing

Once all the nodes are made, I wrapped a drywall screen tightly around the pipe and sanded it back and forth several times to make it rougher and gave the entire length of the pipe some "grain."

This is a quick process and helps clean up some of any inadvertent scorching of the nodes. Once the pipes are scraped, they are ready for color.

We used three coats of Minwax gold stain, followed by three clear coats of Minwax polyurethane to seal it.

We use wipes on the gloves for both finishing and polyethylene seal (please remember that the appearance of fake bamboo may change color due to rainy environment and strong sun rays).

Step 6: Panels and lashing

Due to the final weight of our wall, we knew in advance that we would have to keep it in small panels in order to move/remove/maintain the entire wall.

We arrange the pipes in an aesthetically pleasing line with random heights and number each pipe on the inside bottom to help us remember the order. Each panel consists of one 3″ diameter tube, seven 2″ tubes, and seven 1-1/2″ tubes.

We drilled holes through each pipe near the bottom and near the top for the threaded rod to pass through and secure each panel. traGoing down one panel at a time, we place the panel on a table covered with a blanket to do the tying work.

Attaching natural sisal rope ties was the most difficult task of this entire project. We tried many different lashing methods before settling on one that looked good, would stay in place, and adequately covered the threaded rod between the pipes.

The panels were heavy and we needed to run the rope through the end of each pipe, so we were glad we were using a table instead of working on the panel upright.

We tied the rope to the end of the panel using a nail hitch, ensuring the threaded rod was covered. From there, we used shear lashings, similar to the one used in How to Build a Wooden Tripod, but with only 3 turns.

We also wrapped the pipes using a rope loop instead of running the entire length between the pipes. Once we made 3 wraps, we pulled the slack at the bottom to tighten the loops and cover the threaded rod.

We repeated the process until the entire panel was joined together, finishing with a nail hitch to secure the rope until the end of the panel's run. Sometimes we had to connect the ends of the cable reels together.

Step 7: Secure the panels

Metal fence posts were driven into the ground about every 3 feet, lining up with the 1-1/2″ pipes. The assembled panels were slid over these fence posts to keep them upright.

Each panel was then connected to the adjacent panel using a threaded rod. Slightly larger holes had to be drilled in the sides of the pipe to accommodate the larger diameter of the couplings.

A few quick hammer blows on the threaded rod at the end moved it enough to hold the couplings and tighten the tubes in place.

Once all the couplings were in place, both ends of the threaded rod were tightened with washers and nuts. the rope was moved over the end nuts to hide them.

Step 8: Add LED lighting (Optional)

We purchased three 30-foot long waterproof LED light strips, connection cable, connectors, and a wireless RGB strip controller from Amazon.com.

We started from a nearby outside outlet and placed the controller inside the lower end of the first 3″ pipe to protect it from the weather.

From there, the LED strip runs vertically inside the 3″ diameter pipe to an eye bolt placed through the center of a pipe cap placed on top of the pipe.

The end of the LED strip is connected to the eyebolt with a clamp. The extension cables extend from the end of the LED strip down the inside of the pipe, to the next large pipe where they are connected to the next LED strip.

The process was repeated until the last 3″ diameter tube.

(Wiring in series resulted in the last light strip being darker than the first, so I plan to reconnect all the light strips so they are in parallel.)
