Materials & Tools Needed
- One printed circuit board from a logic card
- Earring hooks (fishhook style)
- Stiff cardboard
- Mini drill (rotary tool)
- Scissors
- Pencil and marker
- Small pliers
- Jump rings (2 per earring)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Create Your Template
Draw the shape of a guitar on stiff cardboard. In this case, it's the legendary Gibson "Explorer," favored by metalheads worldwide. The shapes can naturally be anything you like, but for simplicity, stick to designs made of straight segments. You can also find inspiration from wall decor shapes or geometric patterns.
Step 2: Cut Out the Template
Cut the cardboard with scissors or a craft knife to get your template.
Step 3: Transfer the Design
Find an area on the circuit board rich with intersecting traces and transfer the drawing there by tracing the profile of the cardboard mask with a marker.
Step 4: Cut the Circuit Board
Mount a thin diamond cutting blade on the mini drill. After clamping the board with a clamp, proceed to cut along the marked lines. Always wear safety glasses for this step. A good work surface or sturdy bench is essential for this kind of detailed work.
Step 5: Drill the Hole
Using a 1.5mm diameter drill bit, make a hole at the top of the pendant where you'll pass a small jump ring.
Step 6: Assemble the Earring
Add a second jump ring before attaching the hook terminal (called a fishhook). This gives the necessary "hinge" that makes DIY earrings more beautiful and comfortable to wear. Store your finished creations on a mirrored jewelry organizer or in a dresser drawer.
Design Variations
While we used a guitar shape, you can create:
- Geometric triangles and diamonds
- Miniature lightning bolts
- Arrow shapes
- Simple rectangles for a modern look
These earrings make excellent gifts. Pair them with a cozy sofa setup in your craft room for the ultimate creative workspace.
FAQ
Can I use any old circuit board?
Yes, any old logic board, motherboard, or even graphics card will work. The more traces and gold pads, the more interesting the design. Just make sure it's clean and free of sharp edges after cutting.
What if I don't have a mini drill?
A jeweler's saw with a fine blade can work, but a rotary tool is much easier. If you're setting up a workshop, consider adding a dedicated workbench to your space.
Are these earrings heavy?
Not at all! Circuit boards are surprisingly lightweight. A pair of earrings weighs about the same as standard plastic or resin earrings. Display them nicely on a nightstand or vanity.
How do I clean the finished earrings?
Wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid submerging them in water as this could damage the board. A bathroom vanity with good lighting is perfect for putting on your new accessories.
Can I make other jewelry from circuit boards?
Absolutely! Try making pendants, bracelets, or even cufflinks. The same technique applies. A bookshelf or display case is great for showcasing your collection.
